Welcome to the Elevate SciEd Curriculum Launch! You have joined a team of passionate and dedicated science educators who are ready to take their teaching to new heights. Over the next 6 months, you will learn how to leverage high-quality instructional materials to engage and inspire your students. You will discover the specific instructional routines that support student sensemaking and gain confidence with NGSS-designed materials. We can't wait to get started!
Here are some of the questions we will explore together:
How do we use phenomena and engineering problems to launch investigations in a unit?
How do we help students use science practices to figure out science ideas?
How do we work with students to decide on next steps in an investigation and push them to go deeper?
How do we help students synthesize science ideas and apply them in new contexts?
How can we purposefully adapt high quality instructional material to meet the needs and interests of our students?

This academic year is my 40-year anniversary in science education. I had a short stint in outdoor education before leaping into public school teaching which I loved for 31 years. For the next 8.5 years I worked at the Maine Department of Education as the Science & Engineering Specialist. In August of 2022 I retired from public education and enthusiastically landed at MMSA where I work with a talented team of science folks and am reinvigorated by working with teachers across Maine.
I live on a farm in Newcastle where I have raised llamas for 30+ years and now have a small geriatric herd of llamas, a growing flock of chickens, a small pride of cats and help steward an apiary of 30+ honey bee hives.
