This guide contains passages and questions that were developed for the English Reading Comprehension Test of the MLS but were ultimately not used. Test item creation involves multiple criteria, such as verifying text complexity of passages, question types, vocabulary, and standards by grade. As well as multiple rounds of rigorous cultural review. Although the passages presented here illustrate appropriate text complexity, vocabulary levels, and questions, they did not meet our standards for cultural appropriateness. The content may be unfamiliar or distracting to students, so these particular passages do not appear in the test.
Table of Contents: On each page you will find a table of contents. Click any link in the table to jump down to a particular section.
Passage: On pages for grades "2 through 5" and "6 through 9" there will be a "passage" section: This includes the passage and images students are given as well as a reasoning for not including this particular content.
Questions: "Passage" sections are followed by "Questions". These are the questions students would be asked as well as the correct answer to each.
Rationale: The "Rationale" section is a drop-down. Opening this section up will give you detailed information about each question asked and why answers were included.
