Fujita Scale

Created by Yash Samat | samat.yash@gmail.com

Project Description:

The Fujita Scale is a tornado scale used to measure the severity of a tornado. It is measured in "EF"s. EF-1 is analogous to a Level 1 hurricane. In other words, it is the least severe with winds between 40 and 72 miles per hour. EF-5 is the most severe with winds greater than 200 miles per hour. In this 3D design-build project, I developed a tactile version of the Fujita Scale that is accessible for the visually impaired.

Final Design

Includes a QR Code on the back which takes the user to a site giving information about Fujita Scale. Includes braille labels. The final design was presented at visually impaired schools and also tested by their teachers and students. One particular teacher at a visually impaired school reported that "The Fujita Scale allows students to understand how the scale effects the environment. Typically the scale is presented in a chart or with pictures. The 3D printed version allows a student with no vision to get a better understanding of what the different damage levels would actually look like to a home during a tornado."
