Course description: Basketball/team sports is an elective style class that will teach skill development, strategy and teamwork. This class has a variety of skill level from no experience to playing on our school team. This should not discourage you from doing the best of your ability. Each student will take away an understanding of the game, so they will be able to coach, play and referee games.
The class will first go through a month of skill development led by the teacher. EVERY student will do this, because each skill level has a responsibility. Skill levels are broken down into advanced, intermediate and beginner. Advanced is anyone that has played in an organized league with a coach or referee (park district, MASC, YMCA, etc.), intermediate is anyone that has played basketball in “pick up” games (full-court games with no referee), and beginner will be anyone that has only shot around or never played before. Students will go through various skill development drills: where beginners look to get better at the skills, intermediate will be refining skills and advanced will be refining their skills, as well as, figuring out a coaching style.
After a month of class, students will be put in teams and be designated jobs. The job titles are as follows: coach, equipment manager, fitness leader, team manager and all students will be considered players. Coach is responsible for coming up with a practice plan, and must have drills planned and printed out for each team member. The coach will also be responsible for the team’s behavior, skill development and style of play (coaches will change). Fitness manager is responsible for the warm up and stretching. Fitness manager must submit a warm-up plan to the team. Equipment manager will be directed by the COACH to retrieve whatever equipment needed for practice, fitness manager must submit request to coach (cones, basketballs, jump ropes etc…). The team manager will be responsible for the reporting of scores and keeping track of records.
Each student will be required to have a 3 ring binder to put all artifacts (drills, fitness plan etc…). This will be yours to keep, hopefully filled with multiple drills to use when you become a coach. This binder will be checked and given a grade periodically, to make sure students are keeping up with rules and content of game. Coach will get an individual grade for binder, as well as a team grade. So, coaches make sure you get everything from your team, and make sure your team gets everything from you!
Students should be READY, RESPECTFUL AND RESPONSIBLE. These are not only qualities that will benefit you in school but more importantly in life! Follow these guiding principles and you will find that things get much easier! In line with our IB learner profile students will spend time working on communication, being risk-takers, globally aware of other cultures, as well as being balanced, knowledgeable and open minded.
