The Longer Winter is an oil painting by Alex Garant and was part of her series entitled "Wakefulness." Alluring and poignant, “Wakefulness” is a culmination of surreal paintings in Garant’s distinct off-register style. The artist explains… “Wakefulness is a recurring brain state of consciousness in which an individual is conscious and engaged. This series is meant to initiate reactive responses to the external visual stimuli offered through the superposition of figurative elements and vivid colors.
Born in Quebec City, Canada, Alex Garant established herself as the pioneer of Contemporary Figurative Op Art. Garant is known as the inventor of "Analogue Glitch Art" or "Optic Pop", a style she masters by using double image patterns, duplication of elements, optical illusions, and image superposition as key components of her imagery. She studied visual arts at Notre-Dame–De-Foy College near Quebec City. It was a heart attack in 2012 that catalyzed her full dedication to art, forever altering her perspective on the world.

“The design brief from Art Director Than Saffiel for Rachel Weaver’s ‘Dizzy’ included a link to illustrator (and fellow Canadian) Alex Garant. After playing with a selection of her mesmerizing images that so perfectly encapsulated the condition of dizziness, we settled on the moody blue/red gradient version. With a few subtle tweaks to adjust the contrast of the text with the image, the final cover came together easily with the artwork informing design choices for the spine and back cover." - as published in Spine Magazine
A mother’s memoir that reckons with her son’s descent into severe mental illness. What appears to be substance use disorder in high school later becomes a dual diagnosis as bipolar disorder emerges. Her son soon grows disillusioned with prescribed pharmaceuticals and participates in a residential treatment program that assists people in forgoing medication altogether. However, the program ultimately ejects him from the community for the very behaviors that the medication once managed. The book chronicles Sandler's initial denial of her truth, her painful awakening to mental illness in her family, and her eventual acceptance that she cannot save her son—only he can save himself.
