Nellitheertha Cave Temple

Nellitheertha, a serene village in Dakshina Kannada, Karnataka, is renowned for the ancient Nellitheertha Cave Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Located about 25 km from Mangalore, the temple is over 1,000 years old and features a 200-foot-long cave where water continuously drips into a natural pond — inspiring the name “Nellitheertha,” meaning “dripping water like gooseberries.” Legend says Sage Jabali performed penance here, leading to Goddess Durga’s assurance to defeat the demon Arunasura, linking the site to the nearby Kateel Temple. Visitors crawl through the narrow cave to reach the sanctum, making it a unique spiritual experience. Surrounded by lush greenery, Nellitheertha is easily accessible by road and is part of regional pilgrimage routes.

ನೆಲ್ಲಿತೀರ್ಥವು ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಕನ್ನಡ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ಮಂಗಳೂರಿನಿಂದ ಸುಮಾರು ೨೫ ಕಿಮೀ ದೂರದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಶಾಂತ ಗ್ರಾಮವಾಗಿದೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ೧೦೦೦ ವರ್ಷ ಹಳೆಯದಾದ ಶಿವನಿಗೆ ಸಮರ್ಪಿತವಾದ ಗುಹಾಲಯ ಸುಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ. ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ೨೦೦ ಅಡಿ ಉದ್ದದ ಗುಹೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮೇಲಿನಿಂದ ನಿರಂತರವಾಗಿ ನೀರು ಸುರಿಯುವದು ವಿಶೇಷ. “ನೆಲ್ಲಿತೀರ್ಥ” ಎಂಬ ಪದವು “ನೆಲ್ಲಿಕಾಯಿ ಹೋಲುವ ನೀರಿನ ಧಾರೆ” ಎನ್ನುವ ಅರ್ಥ ನೀಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಋಷಿ ಜಾಬಾಲಿ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ತಪಸ್ಸು ಮಾಡಿ, ದೇವಿ ದುರ್ಗೆಯು ಅರುಣಾಸುರನ ನಾಶದ ಭರವಸೆ ನೀಡಿದ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರವೂ ಇದಾಗಿದೆ. ಪ್ರವಾಸಿಗರು ಕಿರಿದಾದ ಗುಹೆಯ ಮೂಲಕ ತೆವಳುತ್ತಾ ಗರ್ಭಗುಡಿಯನ್ನು ತಲುಪುತ್ತಾರೆ, ಇದು ಒಂದು ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟ ಆಧ್ಯಾತ್ಮಿಕ ಅನುಭವವಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ಸ್ಥಳವು ಹಸಿರಿನಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿದ ವಾತಾವರಣ ಹೊಂದಿದೆ. ಮಂಗಳೂರು ನಗರದಿಂದ ಸುಲಭವಾಗಿ ರಸ್ತೆ ಮೂಲಕ ತಲುಪಬಹುದಾಗಿದೆ.

Nellitheertha is known for its ancient cave next to the temple, shaped like a five-headed cobra. To reach the holy pond called Nelli Theertha, one must walk about 200 meters inside the cave. The path is narrow and dark, so people must bend, crawl, and use a torch. There are small streams and fresh air along the way. At the end, the cave opens into a big space with a pond and the Jabaleshwara Shivalinga. Water flows around the Shivalinga, and devotees offer prayers here. The cave also has a spot where Sage Jabali is said to have meditated. Other small caves and Shivalingas exist deeper inside, but they are closed to visitors for safety. The whole place feels peaceful and spiritual.

ನೆಲ್ಲಿತೀರ್ಥವು ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಪಕ್ಕದ ಐದು ತಲೆಯ ನಾಗನ ಆಕಾರದ ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ಗುಹೆಗೆ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧವಾಗಿದೆ. ಸುಮಾರು ೨೦೦ ಮೀಟರ್ ದೂರದ ಗುಹೆಯೊಳಗಿನ ಪವಿತ್ರ ತೀರ್ಥಕುಂಡವನ್ನು ತಲುಪಲು ಕತ್ತಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಬಾಗಿಕೊಂಡು ಅಥವಾ ತೆವಳುತ್ತ ಹೋಗಬೇಕು. ದಾರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ತಾಜಾ ಗಾಳಿ ಮತ್ತು ನೀರಿನ ಹರಿವಿದೆ. ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ, ಗುಹೆ ವಿಶಾಲವಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಜಬಲೇಶ್ವರ ಶಿವಲಿಂಗ ಹಾಗೂ ತೀರ್ಥಕುಂಡವಿದೆ. ಶಿವಲಿಂಗದ ಸುತ್ತ ನೀರು ಹರಿಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದು, ಭಕ್ತರು ಅಭಿಷೇಕ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಮಹರ್ಷಿ ಜಾಬಾಲಿಯ ಧ್ಯಾನಸ್ಥಳವೂ ಇದೆ.  ಭದ್ರತಾ ಕಾರಣಗಳಿಂದ ಒಳಗಿನ ಇತರ ಗುಹೆಗಳು ಮುಚ್ಚಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿವೆ.  ಈ ಸ್ಥಳವು ಶಾಂತ ಮತ್ತು ಆಧ್ಯಾತ್ಮಿಕ ವಾತಾವರಣ ಹೊಂದಿದೆ.

How to reach:

Nellitheertha is easily accessible by road, rail, and air. The nearest railway stations are Mangalore Central (32 km) and Mangalore Junction (35 km), well-connected to major cities. Mangalore International Airport (IXE), about 18–20 km away, offers domestic and international flights. Direct buses run from Mangalore Central Bus Stand to Nellitheertha, or you can take a bus to Yedapadavu (22 km) and then travel 8 km via Muchur to reach the temple.

ನೆಲ್ಲಿತೀರ್ಥವನ್ನು ರಸ್ತೆ, ರೈಲು ಮತ್ತು ವಿಮಾನದ ಮೂಲಕ ಸುಲಭವಾಗಿ ತಲುಪಬಹುದು. ಹತ್ತಿರದ ರೈಲು ನಿಲ್ದಾಣಗಳು ಮಂಗಳೂರು ಸೆಂಟ್ರಲ್ (೩೨ ಕಿಮೀ) ಮತ್ತು ಮಂಗಳೂರು ಜಂಕ್ಷನ್ (೩೫ ಕಿಮೀ), ಪ್ರಮುಖ ನಗರಗಳಿಗೆ ಉತ್ತಮ ಸಂಪರ್ಕ ಹೊಂದಿವೆ. ಸುಮಾರು ೧೮-೨೦ ಕಿಮೀ ದೂರದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಮಂಗಳೂರು ಅಂತರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ವಿಮಾನ ನಿಲ್ದಾಣ ದೇಶೀಯ ಮತ್ತು ಅಂತರರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ವಿಮಾನಗಳನ್ನು ಒದಗಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಮಂಗಳೂರು ಕೇಂದ್ರ ಬಸ್ ನಿಲ್ದಾಣದಿಂದ ನೆಲ್ಲಿತೀರ್ಥಕ್ಕೆ ನೇರ ಬಸ್ಸುಗಳು ಚಲಿಸುತ್ತವೆ, ಅಥವಾ ನೀವು ಯೆಡಪದವು ( ೨೨  ಕಿಮೀ) ಗೆ ಬಸ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂಚರಿಸಿ ನಂತರ ಮುಚ್ಚೂರು ಮೂಲಕ ೮ ಕಿಮೀ ಪ್ರಯಾಣಿಸಿ ದೇವಾಲಯವನ್ನು ತಲುಪಬಹುದು.
