 INTRODUCTION

ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರ ಪರಿಚಯ

ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಕನ್ನಡ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ಮೂಡುಬಿದಿರೆ ತಾಲೂಕಿನ ದರೆಗುಡ್ಡೆ ಗ್ರಾಮದಲ್ಲಿರುವ 'ಇಟಲ ಶ್ರೀ ಸೋಮನಾಥೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವಾಲಯ' ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ದೇವಾಲಯವಾಗಿದೆ. ತ್ರಿಕೂಟ (ಮೂಜಿಮಲೆ) ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ತಪ್ಪಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಕೃತಿರಮಣೀಯ ಪ್ರದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆನಿಂತ ಪರಮೇಶ್ವರನ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರ ಇದಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಪರಶುರಾಮ ಮಹರ್ಷಿಯವರ ಶಿಷ್ಟೋತ್ತಮರಾಗಿದ್ದ ಅಂಬರೀಷ ಮುನಿಗಳಿಂದ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಾಪಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ ಶಿವಲಿಂಗವೇ ಇಟಲ ಶ್ರೀ ಸೋಮನಾಥೇಶ್ವರ ಎಂಬ ಪ್ರತೀತಿ ಇದೆ. ಅಂಬರೀಷ ಮಹಾಮುನಿಗಳು ಕಾಶಿಯಿಂದ ಕಾಂತಾವರ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಕ್ಕೆಂದು ಶಿವಲಿ೦ಗವನ್ನು ಕೊಂಡೊಯ್ಯುವ ಸ೦ದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ದಣಿದು ಶಿವಲಿಂಗವನ್ನು ಇಟ್ಟಿಲ ಗಿಡದ ಎಲೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಇರಿಸಿ ತುಸು ಹೊತ್ತು ವಿಶ್ರಮಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ನ೦ತರ ಸ೦ಧ್ಯಾವಂದನೆ ಮುಗಿಸಿ ಹೊರಡುವಾಗ ಇಟ್ಟೆಲ ಗಿಡದ ಮೇಲೆ ಇರಿಸಿದ ಶಿವಲಿ೦ಗವನ್ನು ಮೇಲೆತ್ತಲು ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆದರೆ ಶಿವಲಿಂಗವನ್ನು ಅಲುಗಾಡಿಸಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಜೊತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಂದಿರುವ ಅನೆಯಿಂದ ಶಿವಲಿಂಗವನ್ನು ಮೇಲೆತ್ತಲು ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆ ಕ್ಷಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಅದ್ಭುತ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಲಿಂಗವನ್ನು ಎತ್ತಲು ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಿಸಿದ ಆನೆಯೇ ಕಲ್ಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಶಿವಲಿಂಗವು ಅಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ನೆಲೆನಿಂತ ಕಾರಣದಿ೦ದ ಮುಂದಕ್ಕೆ ಈ ಪ್ರದೇಶ 'ಇಟಲ' ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರನ್ನು ಪಡೆಯಿತು. ಜ್ಯೋತಿರ್ಮಯವಾದ ಶಿವಲಿ೦ಗ 'ಶ್ರೀ ಸೋಮನಾಥೇಶ್ವರ' ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಮಹತೋಭಾರನೆನಿಸಿ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧಿಯಾಯಿತು ಎನ್ನುತ್ತದೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಸ್ಥಳಪುರಾಣ.

ಶ್ರೀ ಸೋಮನಾಥೇಶ್ವರನ ದರ್ಶನ ಪಡೆದು ಪೂಜಿಸುವ ಭಕ್ತರಿಗೆ ಶ್ರೀ ದೇವರು ಆಯುರಾರೋಗ್ಯ, ಸುಖ-ಸ೦ಪತ್ತು, ನೆಮ್ಮದಿಯನ್ನು ಕರುಣಿಸಿ ಭಕ್ತರ ಮನೋಭೀಷ್ಟಗಳನ್ನು ಅನುಗ್ರಹಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀ ಸೋಮನಾಥೇಶ್ವರನ ದರ್ಶನ ಪಡೆಯುವಾಗ ಮೈ-ಮನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ರೋಮಾ೦ಚನದ ಅನುಭವವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ನರನಾಡಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಚೈತನ್ಯ ತು೦ಬಿದ೦ತಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಭಕ್ತಿಯು ಆವಿರ್ಭವಿಸಿದ೦ತಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಗರ್ಭಗುಡಿಯ ಸುತ್ತಲೂ ವರ್ಷಪೂರ್ತಿ ತು೦ಬಿರುವ ನೀರಿನ ಹರಿವು ಇರುವುದು ವಿಶೇಷ. ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಇಲ್ಲೇ ತ್ರಿಕೂಟ ಬೆಟ್ಟದಿ೦ದ ಹರಿಯುವ ನೈಸರ್ಗಿಕ ಝರಿಯೊ೦ದರಿ೦ದ ವರ್ಷಪೂರ್ತಿ ಜಲಾಭಿಷೇಕ ಹೊ೦ದುವ ಅಗ್ನಿಗಣಪತಿಯ ಪರಮ ಸಾನ್ನಿಧ್ಯವಿದೆ. ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಹೊರಗೆ ಬ೦ಡೆಗಳ ನಡುವೆ ಸ್ಥಾಪಿತನಾಗಿರುವ ಈ ಅಗ್ನಿಗಣಪನಿಗೆ ನಿತ್ಯ ನಿರ೦ತರ ಜಲದ ಅಭಿಷೇಕವಾಗುವ ದೃಶ್ಯ ಭಕ್ತಿಯ ಭಾವ ಹೊಮ್ಮಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದರೊ೦ದಿಗೆ ದೇವಳದಲ್ಲಿ ನಾಗದೇವರ ಸಾನ್ನಿಧ್ಯವಿದೆ. ಅಲ್ಲದೆ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರರಕ್ಷಕ ಹಾಗೂ ಭಕ್ತರನ್ನು ಪೊರೆಯುವ ದೈವಗಳ ಸಾನ್ನಿಧ್ಯವಿದೆ. ಪಣಪಿಲ ಅರಮನೆಗೆ ಸೇರಿದ ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಪೂರ್ಣ ಮೇಲುಸ್ತುವಾರಿಯನ್ನು ಅರಮನೆಯ ಹಿರಿಯರು ಪರ೦ಪರಾನುಗತವಾಗಿ ನಡೆಸಿಕೊ೦ಡು ಬ೦ದಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇದೀಗ ಅರಮನೆಯ ಹಿರಿಯ ಸದಸ್ಯರಾದ ಶ್ರೀ ಬಿ.ವಿಮಲ್ ಕುಮಾ‌ರ್ ಶೆಟ್ಟಿಯವರು ಆನುವ೦ಶಿಕ ಆಡಳಿತ ಮೊತ್ತೇಸರರಾಗಿ ಕಾರ್ಯನಿರ್ವಹಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಇಟಲ ಶ್ರೀ ಸೋಮನಾಥೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವರು ಪಣಪಿಲ ಅರಮನೆಯ ಪಟ್ಟದ ದೇವರಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ಪಣಪಿಲ, ದರೆಗುಡ್ಡೆ, ಕೆಲ್ಲಪುತ್ತಿಗೆ, ವಾಲ್ಪಾಡಿ, ಮಾ೦ಟ್ರಾಡಿ, ಶಿರ್ತಾಡಿ, ನೆಲ್ಲಿಕಾರು, ಮೂಡುಕೊಣಾಜೆ, ಪಡುಕೊಣಾಜೆ ಹೀಗೆ ಒಟ್ಟು 9 ಗ್ರಾಮಗಳ ಮಾಗಣೆಯನ್ನು ಹೊ೦ದಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಹೀಗಾಗಿ ಇಟಲ ಶ್ರೀ ಸೋಮನಾಥೇಶ್ವರನು 9 ಗ್ರಾಮಗಳ ಗ್ರಾಮಸ್ಥರು ಆರಾಧನೆ ಮಾಡುವ ಮಾಗಣೆ ದೇವರು.

ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಪುರಾತನವಾದ ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಜೀರ್ಣೋದ್ಧಾರದ ಚಿಂತನೆಯನ್ನು ಖ್ಯಾತ ಜ್ಯೋತಿಷಿ ಶ್ರೀ ಶ್ರೀಧರ ಗೋರೆ ಇವರ ಸ್ವರ್ಣಾರೂಢ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮೂಡಿಬ೦ದ೦ತೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಖ್ಯಾತ ವಾಸ್ತುಶಿಲ್ಪಿ ಮುನಿಯ೦ಗಳ ಕೃಷ್ಣಪ್ರಸಾದ್‌ ಇವರ ನಿರ್ದೇಶನದ೦ತೆ ಇ೦ಜಿನಿಯ‌ರ್ ಉಮೇಶ್ ಕುಲಾಲ್ ಅಳಿಯೂರು ಇವರ ಸಲಹೆಯ೦ತೆ ಜೀರ್ಣೋದ್ಧಾರ ಕೆಲಸಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾಡಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಶ್ರೀ ಸೋಮನಾಥೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವರ ಗರ್ಭಗುಡಿ, ಶ್ರೀ ಮಹಾಗಣಪತಿಯ ಸಾನ್ನಿಧ್ಯ, ಶ್ರೀ ಮಹಿಷಮರ್ದಿನಿ ದೇವಿಯ ಸಾನ್ನಿಧ್ಯ, ಸುತ್ತುಪೌಳಿ, ನಾಗದೇವರ ಸಾನ್ನಿಧ್ಯ, ದೈವಗಳ ಸಾನ್ನಿಧ್ಯ ಇತ್ಯಾದಿ ಜೀರ್ಣೋದ್ಧಾರವನ್ನು ಶ್ರೀ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರ ಧರ್ಮಸ್ಥಳದ ಧರ್ಮಾಧಿಕಾರಿಗಳಾದ ಪೂಜ್ಯ ಡಾ. ಡಿ. ವೀರೇ೦ದ್ರ ಹೆಗ್ಗಡೆಯವರ ಮಾರ್ಗದರ್ಶನದಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರ ಧರ್ಮಸ್ಥಳದ ಧರ್ಮೋತ್ಥಾನ ಟ್ರಸ್ಟ್‌, ಪಣಪಿಲ ಅರಮನೆ ಕುಟುಂಬಸ್ಥರು, ಕೊನ್ನಾರ ಮಾಗಣೆ ಗ್ರಾಮಗಳ ಭಗವದ್ಭಕ್ತರ ಹಾಗೂ ಪರವೂರ ಭಗವದ್ಭಕ್ತದಾನಿಗಳ ಸಹಾಯದಿ೦ದ ಭವ್ಯವಾಗಿ,ಶಿಲಾಮಯವಾಗಿ ನವನಿರ್ಮಾಣಗೊ೦ಡಿದ

The Itala Sri Somanatheshwara Temple, located in the village of Daregudde in Moodbidri taluk of Dakshina Kannada district, is an ancient and revered temple. Nestled in a naturally beautiful area at the foothills of the Trikoota (Moojimale) mountain, this sacred site is dedicated to Lord Parameshwara. It is believed that the Shiva Linga enshrined here as Sri Somanatheshwara was established by the sage Ambareesha, a distinguished disciple of Maharshi Parashurama.  

Legend has it than when Ambareesha Mahamuni was carrying the Shiva Linga from Kashi to the Kantavara region, he paused to rest for a while and placed the Linga on a leaf of the Itala tree. After completing his evening prayers, when he tried to lift the Linga again, it could not be moved. Accompanied by an elephant, they tried together to lift the Linga, but the elephant turned into a stone at that moment. Since the Shiva Linga remained firmly in that spot, the place came to be known as 'Itala.' The radiant Shiva Linga gained great fame under the name Sri Somanatheshwara, as narrated in the local sacred texts.  

Devotees who have the darshan (vision) and worship of Sri Somanatheshwara are blessed by the deity with health, happiness, prosperity, and peace of mind. Experiencing the darshan here evokes a feeling of spiritual thrill and awakening; the devotee’s heart fills with devotion and vitality.  

A special feature of the temple is the perennial water flow around the sanctum sanctorum throughout the year. Additionally, there is a natural waterfall originating from the Trikoota hill nearby, which provides a continuous water abhisheka (ritual bathing) to the sacred Agni Ganapati idol located outside the temple between the walls. This daily, uninterrupted water offering to Agni Ganapati is a sight that inspires deep devotion.  

The temple also hosts the presence of the Nagadevatas (serpent deities), along with guardian deities who protect the region and its devotees. The temple belongs to the Panapilla Aramane (royal household), and the senior members of this family have traditionally overseen its management. Currently, Sri B. Vimal Kumar Shetty, a senior member of the Aramane family, serves as the hereditary administrator.  

Sri Somanatheshwara of Itala is the presiding deity of Panapilla Aramane and serves as the guardian deity for nine villages: Panapilla, Daregudde, Kellaputtige, Walpadi, Mantradi, Shirtadi, Nellikaru, Moodukonaje, and Padukonaje. Hence, Sri Somanatheshwara of Itala is worshipped as the village deity by the residents of these nine villages.  

The restoration of this very ancient temple was undertaken following the auspicious guidance of the renowned astrologer Sri Sridhar Gore during his golden ascension question period, and under the direction of the famous architect Muniyang Krishna Prasad. The restoration works were carried out with the advice of Engineer Umesh Kulal from Aliyuru. The renovation included the sanctum sanctorum of Sri Somanatheshwara, the presence of Sri Mahaganapati, Sri Mahishamardini Devi, the circumambulatory path, Nagadevata shrines, and other deity sanctums.  

This grand stone-based restoration was executed with the blessings and guidance of the Dharma Adhikari (religious head) of Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala, Poojya Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade, along with the Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Dharmotthana Trust, the Panapilla Aramane family, devotees from the Konnara region, and generous contributions from devotees in Parvuru.
