What is Community Service?
Community Service is unpaid, elective “work” that helps other people in your community.
Your “community” is generally defined as your neighborhood, your school, or your city, but it can also include people from anywhere whose personal identity, culture, beliefs, or circumstances are like yours.
Volunteering your time, effort, and skills to any of these groups is considered Community Service.
Community Service can include (but is not limited to):
"Why do we do community service?"
First, the Community Service requirement is like class; you have to do it, so you might as well make the most of it!
The difference between service and class is you have the power to choose how and when you complete your service. Not bad, huh?
Second, it feels good: serving your community allows you to help others while contributing to something bigger than yourself.
According to various studies, volunteering (Community Service) can boost your mental and physical health, life satisfaction, self-esteem, and happiness.
Third, Community Service can actually be fun. Don’t believe me? Just ask a classmate who has done a Community Service event with the WBL Office.
If doing Community Service has been boring so far—or feels like a chore—try one of our events. Most of them are at school and you can do them with your classmates.
