Professor Tushaus' Reflection

The Civil Rights Tour of Memphis was one of the highlights of my professional experience. A big part of that was the group of students who signed up for the trip. They are a diverse set of students from three distinct majors. They bonded on the 8 hour van ride down.

The Slave Haven Underground Railroad Museum offered a heritage tour of Memphis. http://www.slavehavenmemphis.com/contact

This turned out to be a life changing experience. Elaine Lee Turner was our tour guide (gold jacket above). She gave an excellent tour of the slave haven museum and the civil rights movement she helped lead as a student. If you go to Memphis, I highly recommend you spend a day with this American hero if you can. You can read more about her involvement here.

Elaine Turner recommended the Four Stop for lunch. It has served delicious soul food to famous people from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to President Barack Obama.

The Blues on Beale Street are a great way to finish a sobering day of reflection on slavery, the Civil Rights movement and yet how far we have to go.

Celebrating at the dedication of Aretha Franklin's Note on Memphis Walk of Fame to the sounds of RESPECT.

What a great group of future leaders finishing a great Civil Rights Tour of Memphis. Thank you all for making it such a meaningful experience.
