ARTS INTEGRATION
Redd Williams, the Artistic Director of COCA’s Hip Hop Crew, devised this piece independently. He used his work for arts integrated teaching in 3 COCAedu classrooms at the Ritenour Gifted Center to integrate the arts with their study of civil rights and social justice. Their driving question is “What is the artist’s role in the fight for civil rights?”…
Redd created this work last year, but utilized it for his classroom work with these students.
Pause for poetry with Poet t.l. Sanders via this clip of his art house film, The kNew-Born. Poet’s performance is palpable, prolific, and powerful as he portrays the real life of Terry Dean—a prodigious felon and a prodigal father.
Interested in seeing the movie?
On Tuesday, January 18, 2022 at 6:00 P.M., Olathe Public Library will be hosting a free screening followed by a Q&A with Poet. As well, the film can be streamed January 19-22, 2022. Tickets are $10. Click here if you prefer to view the film on your TV or device.
Come see the knew born!

Thanks to Tom Tobias for sending MDO these articles about Arts Integration:
From the Wallace Foundation through AIR:
This presentation seeks to help educators quantify the effects of arts integration in schools and identify programs and activities that could qualify for federal funding. It summarizes a report by the American Institutes for Research that found that arts integration can move the average student from the 50th to the 54th percentile in student achievement. It further points to 44 arts integration programs that show enough evidence of effectiveness to qualify for federal funding under the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 (ESSA).

UMKC
Art meets science
While science is the focus of NextGen, the opening events included our incredible performing arts with two original pieces: a dance choreographed through UMKC’s dance department and a composition from an MU graduate student.
Using a cell phone attached to a ceiling fan, married dancers Mitchell and Claire Hilleren communicated via Zoom with Barrios, to collaborate on the development of the piece.
Leverage Dance Theatre wins Mid-America Emmy
St. Louis-based Leverage Dance Theater, Aligned Media & Sky Pie Studio were awarded a Mid-America Emmy Award on October 23, 2021.
Quarantined is an exploration of the concept that, even within tremendous restriction, there exists extraordinary potential. Leverage artist Jeffrey Mitchell came up with the concept for the film during the Covid-19 lockdown as part of Leverage's "Works From Home" series. Though she knew it's potential, Leverage Artistic Director Diana Barrios never imagined having the resources to fully realize the work.
