Aloha and welcome to the website dedicated to He lau nā moʻolelo: Hawaiian Evangelical Association (HEA) Names File Collection Project. This project is funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and received the FY2020 Native Hawaiian Library Services grant award.

He lau nā moʻolelo: Hawaiian Evangelical Association (HEA) Names File Collection Project will transcribe, digitize, and create metadata for the Hawaiʻi Evangelical Association (HEA) collection, which consists of material written mainly in ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi by approximately 1,300 individuals. This large collection of primary sources (1853-1947) provides an opportunity to broaden and deepen discussion and development of Kānaka Maoli and indigenous methodologies and approaches to knowledge organization and preservation. By focusing on transcribing letters rather than translating them, the collection is made more accessible while maintaining the primary sources as cultural, intellectual, spiritual, and historical documents that support ongoing indigenization & education efforts. Furthermore, transcribing provides an opportunity to develop subject categories in ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi as part of a larger effort to advocate for appropriate Kānaka Maoli Archival content management practices, as well as to connect with other institutions who care for similar collections.

The Hawaii Evangelical Association (HEA) Archives are housed and cared for by the Hawaiian Mission Children's Society Library (HMCSL) at the Hawaiian Mission Houses Historic Site and Archives (HMHHSA) in agreement with the Hawaii Conference of the United Church of Christ (HCUCC).

Hawaii Evangelical Association (HEA), the forerunner of what is now known as the Hawaii Conference United Church of Christ (HCUCC).
