Year 4
Year 4
In this lesson we watched some e-safety videos about how to stay safe online, how to protect our personal information and what we need to stay safe from. We then looked at different scenarios and gave our advice of what the person involved should do.
To identify that accuracy in programming is important
● I can program a computer by typing commands
● I can explain the effect of changing a value of a command
● I can create a code snippet for a given purpose
● Program
● Turtle — an arrow or turtle image on screen that draws a line as it is programmed
● Commands
● Code snippet — this could be the same as a program; it can have several sets of commands in one program
In this lesson children were introduced to programming in Logo. Logo is a text-based programming language where children type commands that are then drawn on screen. Children then learnt the basic Logo commands, and used their knowledge of them to read and write code to make the onscreen turtle move.
We got the turtle to make shapes
and numbers
To create a program in a text-based language
● I can use a template to draw what I want my program to do
● I can write an algorithm to produce a given outcome
● I can test my algorithm in a text-based language
● Algorithm — the part of the design of the program that is precise instructions to be implemented as code
● Design
● Debug — the process of finding and correcting errors in your code
● Logo commands as detailed in the ‘Glossary’ handout
In this lesson, children created algorithms (a set of instructions in the correct order) for their initials. They then implemented these algorithms by writing them in Logo commands to draw the letter. They then debugged their code by finding and fixing any errors that they spotted.
First we drew our initial and write the code.
We then tested out our code to see if we needed to fix any errors (debug our code)
To explain what ‘repeat’ means
● I can identify repetition in everyday tasks
● I can identify patterns in a sequence
● I can use a count-controlled loop to produce a given outcome
Pattern, repeat, repetition, count-controlled loop, algorithm, value
In this lesson,we looked at examples of patterns in everyday life. We recognised where numbers, shapes, and symbols are repeated, and how many times repeats occur.
Safer Internet Day 2025 fell on the 11th of February 2025, with celebrations and learning based around the theme ‘Too good to be true? Protecting yourself and others from scams online‘
Safer Internet Day is the UK’s biggest celebration of online safety. Each year we cover an online issue or theme that speaks about the things young people are seeing and experiencing online. Created in consultation with young people across the UK, this year Safer Internet Day was focused on the issue of scams online and for young people, how to protect themselves and others, as well as what support is available to them.
