LO: To know how to be SMART online
During this lesson, we looked at various scenario cards and wrote down what we would do to stay smart and safe online.
This lesson will introduce pupils to programming in Logo. Logo is a text-based programming language where pupils type commands that are then drawn on screen. Pupils will learn the basic Logo commands, and will use their knowledge of them to read and write code.
To identify that accuracy in programming is important
● I can program a computer by typing commands
● I can explain the effect of changing a value of a command
● I can create a code snippet for a given purpose
● Program
● Turtle — an arrow or turtle image on screen that draws a line as it is programmed
● Commands
● Code snippet — this could be the same as a program; it can have several sets of commands in one program
In this lesson, pupils will create algorithms (a set of instructions in the correct order) for their initials. They will then implement these algorithms by writing them in Logo commands to draw the letter. They will debug their code by finding and fixing any errors that they spot.
To create a program in a text-based language
● I can use a template to draw what I want my program to do
● I can write an algorithm to produce a given outcome
● I can test my algorithm in a text-based language
● Algorithm — the part of the design of the program that is precise instructions to be implemented as code
● Design
● Debug — the process of finding and correcting errors in your code
● Logo commands as detailed in the ‘Glossary’ handout
For Internet Safety Day, Year 4 explored what AI is and how it can be used safely and responsibly. Woodpecker Class worked together to learn about the benefits of AI, as well as the importance of staying safe online, protecting personal information, and checking that information is correct. They shared their learning in a special assembly, where they helped other children in the school understand how to use AI in a sensible and responsible way. Have a read of some of the interesting facts they discovered!
AI stands for Artificial Intelligence. It means computers that are designed to think and learn a bit like humans.
AI can help us with things like answering questions, translating languages, and giving directions.
Some games and apps use AI to make characters act more realistic.
AI can make mistakes, so it’s important to check information with a trusted adult or another reliable source.
We should never share personal information (like our full name, address, school, or passwords) with AI tools.
AI should be used kindly and responsibly — not to upset others or create unkind content.
Why did the robot go on a diet?
Because it had too many bytes!
Good news everyone…. AI is very clever…
But it still can’t beat my mum at finding thing’s I’ve lost!
Why shouldn’t you tell secrets to AI?
Because it might spill the data!
Why was the computer cold?
It forgot to close its windows!
What’s a robots favourite type of music?
Heavy Metal!
