Class Information
At RCJH, students have the opportunity to enroll in Theatre I, II, III (H.S. credit), and Theatre Production (H.S. credit). We welcome students to join us any grade level in order to play, learn, and grow in the performing arts! Read below to learn about each course offered!
Theatre I
Summary:
In Theatre I students are introduced to Theatre basics in performance and academics. Students are encouraged and expected to participate in group projects and performances. Below are the units we cover over the year!
Requirements:
There are no grade level requirements to join Theatre I. Any students in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade may join Theatre I.
Students will perform, present, and speak in class when required.
Students are expected to work with anyone at anytime during the year if asked
Students will participate in light physical activities throughout the year
Materials Needed:
1" Binder
Loose Leaf Paper
Pencils
Color Pencils/Colors/Markers
Scissors, Rulers, Glue Sticks
Units Taught:
Intro to Theatre - Students learn about creating ensemble, stage terminology, basic theatre history, and acting spaces on stage.
Improv - Students learn the basics of performance through improv (creating scenes from nothing) and practice the use of their voice, character, blocking, and active choices.
Script Reading - Students learn how to read, analyze, and appreciate scripts.
Design - Students learn the basics of costume, set, prop, light, and sound design.
Puppetry - Students will learn about each branch of puppetry. They will create and perform their own puppets and puppet shows.
Film and Editing - Students learn about how to work cameras, film scenes, and edit their own news reports!
Theatre II
Summary:
In Theatre II students will have the opportunity to build upon the previous years lessons. They both revisit last years materials at a higher level but learn material as well. Below are the units we cover over the year!
Requirements:
7th or 8th grade MUST have taken Theatre I the previous year in order to join.
Students will perform, present, and speak in class when required.
Students are expected to work with anyone at anytime during the year if asked
Students will participate in light physical activities throughout the year
Materials Needed:

Loose Leaf Paper
Pencils
Color Pencils/Colors/Markers
Scissors, Rulers, Glue Sticks
Units Taught:
Improv - Students will be able to revist Improv while learning brand new games and techniques.
Monologues - Students will learn how to choose, anotate, practice, and perform monologues.
Script Reading/Performing - Students will learn how to read, anotate, practice, and perform scenes from plays.
Design - Students will practice and execute costume, set, prop, light, and sound design.
Puppetry - Students will learn about rod puppetry. They will create and perform their own puppets and puppet shows.
Film and Editing - Students will practice camera work, film scenes, and create their own youtube videos!
Theatre III
Summary:
In Theatre II students will have the opportunity to build upon the previous years lessons. They both revisit last years materials at a higher level but learn material as well. Below are the units we cover over the year!
Requirements:
Open ONLY to 8th grade students who have taken Theatre I and II credits.
Students will perform, present, and speak in class when required.
Some after-school practice may be required.
Students are expected to work with anyone at anytime during the year if asked
Students will have lessons which include a lot of physical activity
Materials Needed:
1.5" Binder
Loose Leaf Paper
Pencils
Highlighters
Color Pencils/Markers
Scissors, Rulers, Glue Sticks
Small to Medium Amazon or Shoe Box (Can be brought in at whatever time 1st semester)
Extra gym clothes (shorts and t-shirts)
Units Taught:
Improv - Students will be able to revisit Improv while learning brand new games and techniques. -
Stage Combat - Students will learn about physical combat techniques meant for the stage.
Duets/Poetry - Students will learn how to choose, annotate, practice, and perform their own duets and poetry readings.
Theatre College/Profession Research - Students will learn how to research and find different Theatre programs at the collegiate level and jobs at the professional level.
Design - Students will practice and execute costume, set, prop, light, and sound design - Students will potentially create their designs in relation to the school Fall or Spring shows.
Puppetry - Students will learn about shadow puppetry. Students will create their own Crankie Box, write, design, and perform their own shows.
Film and Editing - Students will practice camera work, film scenes, and create their own short films!
Theatre Production
Summary:
In Theatre Production students students take a practical project based approach! Students in Theatre Production are actively participating in Cavalier Theatre. They perform and compete after-school and on weekends for UIL.
Requirements:
Open to 7th and 8th grade students who have taken minimum 1 theatre credit.
Students must be chosen the year before by Mr. Hernandez - you cannot join this class without Mr. Hernandez's approval.
Consistent after-school practice is required. Some weekends are required.
Students are expected to work with anyone at anytime during the year if asked
Students are expected to participate in the Fall/Spring Show; UIL Solo/Duet/Prose/Poetry; Both.

Lunchbox (snack or meal for afterschool on days staying for practice if desired)
Projects Available During The Year:
Students do not have normal units in this class. Students are actively working projects, performances, and competitions throughout the year.
UIL Solo/Duet - Students will compete in UIL acting competitions on Saturdays, either by themself or with a partner. Students are required to memorize a piece on their own time and practice minimum once a week after school.
UIL Prose/Poetry - Students will compete in UIL speaking competitions on Saturdays, by themselves. Students are required to memorize a piece on their own time and practice minimum once a week after school.
Fall Show - Students can participate in tech (management, sound, light, props, costume, makeup) or as an actor. Minimum two after-school practices a week and one Saturday a month. Minimum two public performances.
UIL Spring One Act Play - Students can participate in tech (management, sound, light, props, costume, makeup) or as an actor. Minimum two after-school practices a week and one Saturday a month. Minimum two public performances. Minimum two elementary performances. This is a Mission CISD contest.
