Some of you might be wondering what Innovation Week is. Well, let me just say it’s a week full of fun activities for you to do. Innovation Week at Alma Martinez will be from May 20th to May 25th. It takes place 2 weeks after the STAAR test.
During Innovation Week, you get to choose your top 3 “clubs” that you want to participate in. For example, I might choose Geology, Zoology, and Writing. During the week they will assign me my “club” based on my choices (you might not get your top favorite). Then during that week, you will participate in that activity for the entire school day.
When you do an activity you will be in a group with 5th graders and 6th graders. This is okay since you want to collaborate and have fun with people all over the school.
Innovation week is a week full of excitement, fun and interesting activities. I hope you enjoy it as much as I will!

Olympic gold medals are mostly made out of sterling silver.
Golf has been played on the moon.
Golf balls were originally made out of dried cow eyes.
The first Olympic games were in 776 BC.
Dear Fidgety Fiona,
It’s good that you are cleaning up after the messes but I understand that you want to go to recess. Maybe when you guys are working you can clean up what you can so you don’t have as much of a mess to clean up when recess comes. Maybe if that doesn’t work try telling the teachers how you feel about missing out on recess, give them reasons of why you should be able to go outside like, you need the daily exercise or you need to have a break outside after working inside for a long time. I hope this helps!

The question waffles or pancakes has been a debate for the longest time. Many people would say pancakes because of their fluffy texture or waffles because you can eat them at any time even without syrup. In my opinion, I say waffles are better because when you put them in the toaster, you can choose to either make them crispy or nice and soft. I’d prefer crispy waffles. People say pancakes are good because with pancakes you can mix pretty much anything in the batter if you are making them from scratch. You could put chocolate chips, sprinkles, and even fruits. I asked some students for their opinions and here are the votes.
l = 1 student
Pancakes - l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l
Waffles - l l l l l l l l l
Majority of the first group said they picked pancakes because pancakes are very reliable and it doesn’t matter the shape or size of the pancake. You can also make pancakes into any shapes like animals for younger kids or hearts for Valentines day. The second group said they chose waffles because the outside is crunchy and when you put the syrup on them it goes in the little squares which tastes delicious.
With the tallys you can see pancakes won with the votes of the students in my class. If you want to put your own vote in so we can see what the school thinks click this link: https://docs.google.com/forms

Do you like taking trips? One place you could take a trip to is Waco. Waco has many exciting activities you can do. One amazing experience you can have there is going to Magnolia Market. They have a bakery that sells delicious cupcakes, food trucks full of many amazing kinds of food, an ice cream shop with custom Magnolia flavors, and their own restaurant. They also have a variety of stores including clothing stores, candle shops, book stores, and accessory shops. They also have two main stores. Magnolia Home is where you will find home design but the big store has plants, books, cooking supplies, greenhouse guides, and clothes. The Magnolia Market experience is truly a special one.

These nurses have such interesting answers and they were very patient with me. They were kind and when a kid came in they carefully helped each kid. They are gentle, understanding, and all around great people. I loved listening to them and watching the way they handled each person. They always talked to each other and anyone there. They made the environment of the office fun and exciting. They are the real superheroes of this world.

Have you ever wondered,” Hmm, what do the lunch staff do when they are done serving food?” I have your answer. I interviewed the manager of all the lunch staff, Aurora Hernandez. I asked a couple of questions I have been wondering about for a while.
Q. How do you deal with loud students?
“ Just focus on one student only to give them the best customer service.”
Q. Is the food frozen?
“Some of the food is frozen to keep the quality of the food at it’s best quality and some other food are made from scratch.”
Q. Do you ever make a big mess?
“Well, some days we make a big mess cooking the food that requires a lot of preparation and some others are easy peasy.”
Q. Do you ever have to reuse food?
“No. But also yes we reuse the fruits, salads, the power packs, and the smoothie boxes.”
The next time you go to lunch, think about the staff who worked really hard for this food to be served to you and your friends. Thank you Lunch Staff for making our food we eat everyday!

Think of cryptography as coded messages. They can either be easy to decipher or very complicated. Cryptography was most commonly used in World War II. It played one of the biggest roles in leading Germany to victory. Cryptography is what allowed Germany to pass notes back and forth without Japan knowing anything.
The Enigma machine is a device that can make and decipher codes for you. The Enigma machine was one of the very first mechanical ways to make codes using iterative cipher (it’s a type of cryptography). Alan M actually cracked the code! When the British were getting suspicious of a German invasion they created a device that could crack the code that the Germans made.
In the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) there is a stone called kryptos that is filled with cryptography made by Jim Sanborn. Out of the four coded messages on there only three have been decoded. The last message is one of the most famous unsolved codes in the world! There is a prize for solving the last kryptos code, a lifetime pass to all SourceCon events! It is where sourcers from the CIA and other organizations come to share and improve ideas. It is a very restricted event and very few people (and some of those people are spies!) attend which is why it is such a big honor!
If you dare to try to solve this last code click this link.

Would you like to know how to make your very own adorable stuffed animal out of a sock? If so then continue reading this article to find out how to make your own stuffed animal.
For this craft you will need:
A pair of fluffy socks
Sewing kit
Polyfill (The stuffing)
Buttons (with backings)
To start you will need to make a line below the heel of the sock using a marker. Then you will need to sew along the line that you just made and at the end tie a knot in the string. Cut off the excess sock and flip it inside out. Take a handful of the polyfill and stuff it into the hole in the top of the sock. To make the eyes poke the buttons into the sock. Then, put your hand inside the hole and add the backings. Sew around the hole and with the excess string pull it closed. Using the excess sock you cut out earlier, cut out 2 identical pieces out for the ears, add stuffing to the inside, and then sew them together then attach them to the rest of your sock plushie. Then repeat that process 3 more times for the last ear and both hands. If you would like to you can also make feet but you don’t have to. Now you can accessorize. You could make flower crowns for your plushie, you could do a bow and many more things. Lastly you can add a nose using felt and other details using paint or other art supplies.
Help us show Mr. Lollis some love by wearing as much green as you can on Friday, May 13th.
