Google Cardboard was developed to provide a simple, affordable way to experience Virtual Reality (VR) and it made it easily accessible for the classroom! The most basic versions are simply made from cardboard, some lenses, a neodymium ring magnet, and some velcro. There are DIY kits, but honestly, they're so affordable, it's easy to pick them up on Amazon.
