MiraCosta College | MATH 126 | Online | Course Number 3802 & 3804| 8/18/25 - 12/18/25
In this math class, new topics typically build on previous material. Therefore, I ask that you keep current with the class assignments. The best learning experience is one in which you keep pace with the posted due dates to aid with deeper understanding. Additionally, engaging in the practice opportunities and reading in a timely manner will provide you with sufficient time to seek help in topics you may struggle with by attending to my office hours or reaching out to your teammates. Remember that while you learn, you will struggle, perhaps even make mistakes, and that is ok! If it makes you feel any better, I always make mistakes!! Don't let that keep you from trying, on the contrary think of it as a growth opportunity!
In Canvas (XYZ assignments): You can submit an answer to a homework problem 3 times. If your answer to a problem is still incorrect after 3 tries, you might get a new version of that problem. For quizzes, you have only 3 chances to take each quiz in one sitting in XYZ Homework. Thus, clicking on any quiz will be counted as taking it even though you may not complete any problems. Please ensure you click on the quizzes when you’re ready to complete and submit them.
Attendance: “Attendance” in this online course is measured by completing online work. You may be dropped from the class if you fail to meet any of the following attendance requirements:
First-day attendance requirement: you must create an account, log onto Canvas to enroll in XYZ-Homework, and take the Syllabus Quiz by Monday, August 18th, at 11:59 pm.
You are expected to “attend” regularly by completing assignments online. If you fail to be present in those environments for five days in a row, you may be dropped from the class. Unless you are ahead, you are expected to log on and work at least three times per week.
You may also be dropped from the class if you do not take an exam during the testing window. If you have any difficulties scheduling a testing appointment or showing up to take your test, please email me immediately.
Exam Make-Ups: Full-credit makeup exams will be allowed for serious emergencies that can be documented, such as a car accident, the birth of a child (if you are one of the parents) or hospitalization. Other circumstances, such as having to stay late at work, getting stuck in traffic, not having a ride, having an illness that is not serious, or not having childcare, may not warrant a make-up for full credit. If you miss an exam for any reason, please contact me immediately.
Canvas Assignments: late assignments will be accepted. However, there will be a late penalty.
Please email me regularly! I love hearing from my students! Please use the Canvas inbox or directly to lnakamura@miracosta.edu to email me. You will hear from me within 24 hours, usually much sooner. You can always email me any questions or concerns you have, need to vent, or you need 'moral support'. And I will never feel "bugged" by reading your emails. However, please remember that I do not check my emails over the weekends. However, if you email me over the weekend, I will reply on Monday ASAP!
You must check your email every other day while taking this class, and it is your responsibility to ensure the email addresses on SURF, XYZ-Homework, and Canvas are correct.
Canvas assignments are a key component of this course. They are opportunities to dive deeper into the course content, ensure that you're using correct mathematical notations, and share your experiences with both myself and your teammates. I look forward to discussing these topics and learning from you as you share your experiences.
The semester goes quickly, and life happens! For that reason, it's really important to log in multiple times per week and keep up with the material. It helps to do a little every day. Don't leave assignments until the last minute! Please let me know if you know you will be absent from the online environment for more than 2 days, and let's work together to ensure you can stay on track.
Attendance is essential to your success in this course. In our online class, your attendance is based on logging onto XYZ-Homework at least 3 times a week, participating in the weekly "Canvas Assignments," and completing assignments. Please log in to the class early and often to stay on top of the assignments and readings for the week. This is particularly important during the first week of class. If you have not logged in or completed the first week’s assignments by the deadline, I must drop you from the course as a “No Show”; this also allows other students to join the class from the waitlist. Please complete the assigned readings and assignments as early as your schedule allows that week. If you miss four or more assignments before the drop or withdrawal dates, that is considered excessive absences in the online environment, and I may need to drop you from the course.
I can ensure you have all the necessary resources to complete this course by communicating with me early and often.
If you drop the course, you can do so through SURF. You will receive a failing grade if you do not complete this by the deadline listed in the catalog. Before dropping the class, please see your counselor!
MiraCosta College requires reporting ALL academic dishonesty instances as Academic Integrity Violations. These include:
copying another student’s homework and submitting it as your own
bringing in and using notes or supplemental materials when none are allowed
submitting work or information from an internet source as your own material (without noting it as a reference/resource)
allowing another student to copy your work and submit it. To avoid this, don’t give your work to someone else. Working together means sharing ideas and discussing concepts, and this is acceptable; each student must independently write their own solutions and responses.
Students are expected to work by themselves and may not seek help from another person or the internet in any way; submitting the exam indicates that the student is claiming the work submitted is their own and does follow this policy. If I doubt that the work submitted is yours, I will arrange for an oral exam where a new set of questions will be asked - this will give students a chance to clarify any concerns from the instructor about the submitted work. Should concerns arise about the work being from someone else, not the student who submitted it, alternative questions will be asked verbally so the student can demonstrate their understanding of the concepts and procedures. Academic dishonesty will result in a grade of 0 on an exam.
