Part 1: Introduction to
Custom Foil Text

First, let’s review what foil-press printing is.

Foil-pressing is the application of metallic foil to paper. A heated die is pressed onto the foil, making it adhere to the surface and leaving the foil-pressed design on the paper.

(A die is a specialized tool used in manufacturing industries to cut or shape material using a press.)

Now, let’s review what the limitations of our regular foil-pressed cards are.

• Foil elements cannot be moved

• Foil elements cannot be edited

• Foil elements cannot be added or removed

• The foil layer in the design file should not be edited in any way

• Editable elements (text, design) must not overlap the foil guides in the art file

What is Custom Foil Text?

In late March 2017, Minted launched Custom Foil Text (CFT), allowing custom foil-pressed design elements and text.

For CFT cards, we can edit the foil elements because a custom foil die will be created specifically for each CFT order.

Customers can add custom foil to a card for an additional fee. This fee changes depending on popularity and sales promotions, but generally it runs from $75 to $99.

What can we do with Custom Foil Text?

Custom foil can be added to any element on the front of the card. This includes both text and design elements.

With custom foil enabled:

• Foil elements can be moved

• Foil elements can be edited

• Foil elements can be added and removed

• The foil layer in the design file can be edited

However, editable elements (text, design) still must not overlap the foil elements in the art file.
