Dear Parents and Carers,
As the academic year draws to a close, I write to you with immense pride in what we, as the Leigh Academy Minster community, have collectively achieved since opening our doors in September. This year has been one of extraordinary transformation, and every student, staff member, and family has been integral to our success. Our journey has been guided by our core academy values: Ambition, Achievement, Character, and Responsibility, all of which have shone brightly throughout these past months.
Our commitment to Ambition is reflected in the academic curriculum we have meticulously developed. We have set high expectations for all our students, challenging them to deepen their knowledge and explore new horizons. This rigorous academic foundation is designed to prepare them not just for examinations, but for successful futures. We have seen tremendous growth in student engagement with learning, a testament to their burgeoning ambition.
A cornerstone of our success has been the implementation of our highly successful Small School College Model. This innovative structure has truly transformed the student experience, providing a nurturing environment where individual needs are met with exceptional pastoral care. Within their Colleges, students have developed a profound sense of Character and belonging, fostered through strong relationships with staff and peers. This model has directly led to significant improvements in attendance, punctuality, and behaviour, creating a calm and purposeful atmosphere conducive to learning.
Our students' Responsibility has been pivotal to our transformation. From embracing new routines to actively contributing to their College communities, their ownership of their educational journey has been exemplary. They have shown incredible resilience and adaptability, navigating the changes of a new academy with maturity. This commitment has enabled us to deliver high-quality teaching and learning in every classroom, leading to demonstrable Achievement across all year groups. While external examination results for this first year are not yet published, the internal progress and positive qualitative feedback from students, staff, and external reviewers like Challenge Partners, speak volumes about the academic strides our young people have made.
We are incredibly proud of each and every one of our students for their contributions this year. Their willingness to embrace our vision and embody The Minster Way has laid strong foundations for the future.
Thank you, families, for your unwavering support and partnership throughout this inaugural year. We look forward to building on this success in September.
I wish you all a fantastic well deserved summer break, and I look forward to welcoming our students back in September.
Yours faithfully,
Mr Stevens
Principal
Leigh Academy Minster
I feel immensely privileged and proud to have been appointed Chairman of the Leigh Academy Minster’s Board of Governors. Being involved in what is the first brand new secondary school on the Isle of Sheppey for 50 years, has seen the successful realisation of a campaign I have been waging since 2009, when the Island’s education was changed from a three-tier system to a two-tier system.
At that time Minster College (previously known as Sheppey Comp) was merged with the Cheyne Middle School to form a large academy that was spread across the two sites, with an intake that would have made it one of the largest secondary schools in the country.
I warned at the time that such an academy would be impossible to run and would not improve secondary education on Sheppey, which had been a problem since the early 1970s, when the Island was turned into a comprehensive system, with most of the rest of Kent, including Sittingbourne and Faversham, remaining part of the selective system.
I said that what Sheppey needed were two secondary schools, providing Islanders with a similar choice to that benefitted by children in Sittingbourne.
When I became a member of Parliament for Sittingbourne and Sheppey in 2010, I campaigned continually for a two-school solution. I lobbied a succession of education ministers and officials in the Department for Education, explaining the on-going problem of secondary education on Sheppey, the reasons for that problem, and the solution.
It was only in 2014, following the failure of Oasis to turn the school around, that ministers and officials listened, not least because of the intervention of the Leigh Academies Trust, which made clear it would only become involved in secondary education on Sheppey if the Department for Education agreed to a two-school solution.
I honestly believe that the Leigh Academies Trust has been the saviour of secondary education on the Island. Launching the new Leigh Academy Minster with new infrastructure, new uniforms, and a new ethos, has already started to show dividends.
For the first time in my experience, the Academy has a full complement of committed staff, in both teaching and ancillary roles. Led by an inspirational Principal, who is backed by an experienced and competent senior team.
The Academy has also been given exceptional help and support by the Leigh Academies Trust management team.
As Chairman of the Board of Governors I have been lucky to have as colleagues a team of experienced and committed people, including a number who, like me, live on Sheppey.
I have been involved with secondary education on the Isle of Sheppey for almost 40 years, since my time as one of the Island’s Kent County councillors. During that time, I have often visited the school in its various manifestations, and I can honestly say that in the past year I have seen a transformation in the behaviour, ambition and attitude of the pupils.
If that change continues, and is reflected in our local community, then collectively we will have succeeded, and the Island will have a secondary school of which we can all be very proud.
GORDON HENDERSON
Chairman of Governors

In conclusion of our first dynamic and successful academic year, we wish to express our sincere appreciation for your continued support and active engagement in your child's educational development. The College team has profoundly valued working alongside such a committed and positive school community, whose shared dedication is demonstrably instrumental in prioritizing education across all our initiatives.
Highlights of the Year
This year has been filled with memorable events and significant achievements across the school community:
Enriching End-of-Year Trips: Our students have benefited from a diverse array of end-of-year trips, meticulously designed to complement their academic learning, provide invaluable experiential opportunities, and serve as a well-deserved reward for their hard work. These excursions have ranged from immersive cultural visits to museums and historical sites, to exciting educational outings that brought classroom theories to life, broadening students' horizons and creating lasting memories.
Formative Year 10 Work Experience: Our Year 10 students embarked on vital work experience placements, stepping into diverse professional environments to gain invaluable insights into the world of work. These experiences were crucial for developing essential transferable skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and independence. They allowed students to explore potential career pathways, build confidence in real-world settings, and understand the practical application of their academic studies, significantly shaping their future aspirations.
Proud Representation in Sporting and Performing Arts Competitions: Students across various year groups have proudly represented the academy in a wide spectrum of competitive events, encompassing both sporting fixtures and Performing Arts showcases. These opportunities have not only celebrated individual talent and collective spirit but have also been instrumental in fostering teamwork, discipline, resilience, and creative expression. Whether on the sports field or the stage, our students have demonstrated dedication and commitment, showcasing the breadth of talent within our academy community.
Our students have shown great enthusiasm, creativity and resilience throughout these experiences.
Academic Reflection
This year, our students have immersed themselves in a truly enriching and impactful learning experience. In Key Stage 3, the introduction of the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) has been instrumental in cultivating critical skills and fostering deep inquiry into 'big ideas' through a concept-driven approach. For our Key Stage 4 students, we've provided comprehensive support from the outset to the conclusion of their examination courses, delighted to observe their growing agency and enjoyment as the year progressed. It is this developing confidence, both academically and personally, that has been profoundly rewarding to witness, shaping them into thriving, well-rounded, and content Johnson students. We celebrate these significant strides and trust you will feel the same pride upon reflecting on the end-of-year reports, which you should have recently received.
Student Development
Beyond academic excellence, our dedication lies in cultivating truly well-rounded individuals. This year, we have intentionally driven the development of the IB Learner Profile attributes, alongside our College ethos, weaving them into every aspect of student life to foster inquiring, knowledgeable, principled, and reflective young people. Concurrently, a robust focus on wellbeing, character education, and empowering student voice has ensured that our students are not only academically resilient but also emotionally intelligent and socially responsible, equipped with the virtues to navigate challenges and contribute positively. Furthermore, through diverse opportunities for participation in leadership roles, a vibrant array of clubs, and meaningful community engagement, we have encouraged students to explore their passions, develop collaborative skills, and understand their impact as global citizens, enriching their personal growth and broader contribution.
Your children have grown not only in knowledge but in confidence, empathy, and independence.
Looking Ahead
With the new school year on the horizon, our excitement is profound as we look forward to embarking on new academic challenges, fostering deeper connections, and collectively building upon the successes of the past to reach even greater heights.
Thank You
To all of our families, thank you for your partnership, encouragement, and trust this year. We wish you a safe, restful, and enjoyable summer break.

As the academic year draws to a close, we're thrilled to reflect on a truly outstanding period at Hewlett College. Our students continue to embody the core values of Leigh Academy Minster, demonstrating exceptional dedication, resilience, and a commitment to personal growth. We're incredibly proud of their achievements and the remarkable example they set for our entire school community.
Our students have maintained an impressive 95% cohort attendance rate throughout the year. This dedication to their studies is truly commendable and forms a strong foundation for their continued success.
We are also delighted to announce our newly appointed Attendance Ambassadors: Billie and Michael. They will play a vital role in supporting students in lower schools, sharing their insights and strategies for maintaining excellent attendance, and helping to foster a culture of consistent presence and engagement across the academy.
Just as Hilda Hewlett, the pioneering aviator and first British woman to earn a pilot's license, demonstrated determination, resilience, independence, and entrepreneurship throughout her career, our students have embraced challenges and opportunities. The past few modules have seen students excel in final assessments and examinations, further developing their problem-solving skills and resilience in the face of academic rigour.
We are incredibly excited to officially launch the Hewlett Collective, a new initiative designed to further empower our students and foster a vibrant, supportive community within Hewlett College. The Hewlett Collective will build upon the successes of our previous programs, offering enhanced opportunities for leadership, skill development, and community engagement.
Through the Hewlett Collective, students will have access to:
Expanded Volunteering Opportunities: We'll be working with local organisations and school events to provide even more diverse and impactful volunteering experiences.
Student-Led Initiatives: The Collective will encourage students to propose and lead their own projects, fostering entrepreneurship and leadership skills.

First Inter-College Competition: Race Across the Island!
We are thrilled to announce the Hewlett Collective's very first inter-college competition: Race Across the Island. Taking place on July 11th, this exciting event will see Year 7, 8, and 9 students participate in a virtual cycle race across the Isle of Sheppey. Led by our enthusiastic Year 12 students, participants will virtually visit various local landmarks in a thrilling race to be the fastest college. Beyond fostering healthy competition and teamwork, this event also aims to raise valuable funds for the A Touch of Joules charity, a fantastic cause supporting children and families. We can't wait to see the determination and teamwork on display!
We believe the Hewlett Collective will provide an even richer and more comprehensive experience for our students, preparing them not just for academic success, but for fulfilling and impactful lives beyond Hewlett College. We encourage all students to actively participate and shape the future of this exciting new venture!
We continue our strong commitment to supporting our students' future aspirations. Our comprehensive UCAS support has been invaluable, with personalised guidance for personal statements and applications.
This term has been particularly busy with a range of invaluable events designed to broaden our students' horizons and prepare them for their next steps:
In June, our students attended the UCAS Discovery event at the Kent County Showground. This provided an incredible opportunity to explore a vast array of universities, colleges, apprenticeship providers, and employers, gathering crucial information for their future. The exhibition offered insights into various courses and career paths, with many students taking advantage of the expert advice on offer.
Also in June, Leigh Academy Minster hosted a highly successful Careers Fair, bringing together numerous companies and representatives from diverse industries. Our students engaged enthusiastically, gaining first-hand information about different career sectors and the skills required to succeed.
On July 4th, students benefited from a dedicated UCAS Personal Statement talk delivered by experts from Canterbury Christ Church University. This session provided essential guidance and practical tips, helping our students craft compelling personal statements that truly showcase their strengths and aspirations.
We are also pleased to confirm that our Year 12 students will be undertaking work experience placements from July 14th to 18th. These placements offer invaluable real-world experience, allowing students to apply their classroom learning in a professional environment and gain insights into their chosen fields.
While university remains a popular choice, we fully recognise that not all students will pursue this path. We are dedicated to providing equally robust support for all post-18 pathways, including apprenticeships, employment, and further training. Our aim is to ensure every student feels fully prepared and has all options available to them as they navigate their next steps.
On July 2nd, we had the pleasure of hosting our Year 13 Leavers' Lunch, a wonderful occasion to celebrate the journey of our graduating students. The atmosphere was filled with warmth and camaraderie, and we were incredibly proud of their impeccable behaviour and the genuine respect they showed for the academy and their community. It was a fantastic opportunity to reflect on their time at Hewlett College and to wish them all the very best for their future endeavors. We eagerly anticipate celebrating their achievements on Results Day, August 14th, and hearing about their exciting next steps.
As we head into the summer break, we want to wish all our students and their families a restful and enjoyable time. We look forward to welcoming everyone back in September, ready for another exciting year of learning, growth, and community within Hewlett College and the new Hewlett Collective!

Since its establishment in September 2024, Leigh Academy Minster (LAM) has made substantial progress in the rigorous implementation of its attendance policy. The strategic initiatives undertaken have yielded significant positive outcomes, most notably in the sustained high attendance rates observed at Cody College. This particular college within LAM has consistently maintained attendance figures well above the national average for secondary schools .

To this end, outstanding attendance will continue to be recognized and celebrated through various reward programs designed to acknowledge the dedication of our pupils. Furthermore, the meticulous monitoring of punctuality to the Academy will persist, and the established sanctions for lateness will remain rigorously enforced throughout the forthcoming academic year.
In a proactive measure to continually refine our approach, we are pleased to announce the recent launch of our Attendance Ambassador Programme this academic module. This newly formed group of dedicated pupils, will collaborate closely with our experienced attendance team. Their crucial mandate will involve a thorough investigation into the barriers that may impede consistent attendance. Concurrently, the ambassadors will be instrumental in developing innovative and effective strategies to further enhance and diversify our existing reward systems for exemplary attendance. Author Visit
We are extremely proud to share with you that during Module 6 we were visited by Gordon Henderson, Chairman of the Leigh Academy Minster’s Board of Governors. Mr Henderson is an author of spy fiction novels and a book of short tales Pigeon Pie which he kindly presented to the library in September when we first opened. During his visit he met with our KS3 students who have read his tales during their library lessons. The meeting went exceptionally well in a warm and friendly atmosphere with plenty of thoughtful and witty questions from our students and interesting and remarkable answers from our guest who spoke passionately about his writing career and shared advice with our aspiring writers.
Mr Henderson explained that he has always had a love of the written word and the power of the imagination. Mr Henderson's writing career began when he worked at Woolworths where he wrote a short story which appeared in the chain's magazine. He has been writing ever since.
Mr Henderson spoke to our students about the importance of 'unleashing your imagination' and his belief that it is possible to 'make the world a better place through writing'.
The students involved asked insightful questions and listened carefully to the advice given. They felt inspired to experiment with the written word and we look forward to sharing some of their short stories with you soon.
Student voice is an important part of academy life, and we have looked to capture our fantastic students feedback and comments throughout the course of this academic year. Please see below some key pieces of feedback from our students this year:
When I came to Year 7, I was worried that I would have no friends or what it would be like. But the first day I came in, I made loads of friends! Leigh academy Minster is a place where you can feel safe, supported and have lots of friends. I have enjoyed it here, and I know that I will enjoy my years to come. Now, I feel excited for Year 8, and I know that I will make even more friends next year.
Harley C
When I first started I was nervous. Most of my friends were at a different school so I only had a few friends going in. But now I have a lot of friends, some in different colleges and ones from primary that I became close to. I also do netball club and I recently did a tournament with other schools. I really like Year 7 so far.
Olivia S
My experience at Leigh Academy Minster has been spectacular. I love the lessons, the behavioural system is really fair and if something goes wrong then there's always a teacher who is always there to help and I generally feel really safe here . I have always had a dream to be in a school like this and I am honoured to be a student and Prefect of Leigh Academy Minster
Natalie A
At first I was scared but now all the teachers know me so I am not scared. It is very nice and I am not scared at all and I am very safe and I will always now feel safe at Leigh Academy Minster.
Mason S
This year was fun and a good year even though I was nervous coming to this school. This school has made me as comfortable as possible. If I could redo the year I would as it was a fun year. This school has so many things to do making me feel happy to learn at this new school and that is a fun experience.

Engage with a wide range of universities and colleges: They could speak directly with representatives, gather information on various courses, and get a feel for university life.
Discover apprenticeship and career pathways: Beyond traditional university degrees, students learned about alternative routes such as apprenticeships and direct employment opportunities from various employers.
Access expert advice: The event offered talks and seminars on topics such as researching options, crafting a strong personal statement, and understanding student finance.
Gain inspiration and clarity: By interacting with a diverse set of institutions and industries, students were encouraged to reflect on their aspirations and make more informed decisions about their future steps.
Overall, the UCAS Discovery trip was a crucial step in supporting your Year 12 students as they begin to plan and navigate their pathways beyond Sixth Form.
As the academic year draws to a close, Leigh Academy Minster is delighted to report a hugely successful year for its extracurricular clubs, with unprecedented levels of student participation and enthusiasm. From the creative arts to competitive sports and strategic games, students have embraced the diverse opportunities on offer, enriching their school experience and fostering a vibrant spirit.
The academy has seen a remarkable uplift in engagement across its wide array of clubs, a testament to both the students’ eagerness and the dedicated staff who facilitate these enriching sessions.
Creative Expression and Performance Flourish:
The Vocal Group has hit all the right notes this year, with a strong cohort of budding singers developing their harmonies and performance skills. Likewise, the Dance club has captivated students, offering a dynamic outlet for physical expression and creative choreography.
Minds Engaged in STEM and Strategy:
Beyond the arts, intellectual curiosity has been thriving. The STEM club has seen enthusiastic young minds delving into scientific principles, technological innovations, engineering challenges, and mathematical puzzles, inspiring the next generation of problem-solvers. Meanwhile, the strategic realms of Dungeons and Dragons have provided a popular escape, fostering creativity, teamwork, and critical thinking through imaginative storytelling.
Sporting Success and Community Spirit:
On the sports fields and courts, participation has been equally robust. Football, Netball, Badminton, Rugby, and the increasingly popular Pickleball clubs have all enjoyed excellent attendance. Students have not only honed their athletic abilities but also developed crucial teamwork, sportsmanship, and leadership skills. These clubs have been instrumental in promoting physical well-being and a healthy competitive spirit among our students.
The overwhelming positive attendance this year underscores the value students place on these extracurricular activities (see below for a selection of the clubs that have run this academic year). Leigh Academy Minster remains committed to providing a diverse and exciting club program, looking forward to building on this year's success and continuing to inspire, engage, and empower its students in the years to come.
Dear Parents, Students, and Staff,
As the school year draws to a close, we are proud to reflect on an incredible year of sporting achievement, participation, and progress. From first-time athletes to seasoned competitors, our students have consistently demonstrated teamwork, determination, and school spirit across a wide variety of sports and events.
Here are just some of the highlights from our action-packed year:
We took a talented group of four students to compete at Sir Joseph Williamson’s Mathematical School, where they swam individual races and teamed up for an exciting mixed-gender relay. Their dedication and sportsmanship were commendable throughout the day against some tough competitors.
This year saw boys and girls from Years 7 to 10 participate in a series of small-sided football tournaments at Dartford Goals Centre. The matches were intense, fast-paced, and full of energy – helping students develop quick decision-making and teamwork across multiple fixtures.
Rugby has gone from strength to strength, with a number of fixtures played across all key stages throughout the year. Two standouts performances included:
Year 9/10 Girls – A phenomenal 2nd place out of 15 schools, showing strength, skill, and great composure and were very unlucky not to take home narrowly losing in the final.
Year 8 Boys – Secured 4th place out of 15 in what was most of their first ever experience playing rugby, the boys played with real discipline and drive.
Well done to all our rugby players for their commitment and passion.
Handball fixtures were played across all key stages this year, with students learning the sport quickly and showing fantastic adaptability. Our Year 8 mixed boys and girls team stood out, finishing 5th out of 15 schools – a brilliant result in a very competitive tournament.
This year’s netball competition took place over two scorching days at Mascalls School:
Year 7 Girls, many of whom were new to the sport, showed massive growth, teamwork, and enthusiasm in their first competitive outing.
Year 8 Girls displayed great experience, composure, and determination under extreme conditions finishing in a respectable mid table position at the end of the tournament.
Despite the heat, every student gave their all and demonstrated brilliant sportsmanship throughout.
Held at Sir Joseph Williamson’s Mathematical School on a very warm day, our cross-country runners tackled a challenging hilly course with true grit and determination. Their perseverance and team support were inspirational and reflected the very best of our sporting values.
Our post-16 Football Academy, run in partnership with Charlton Athletic, continues to offer high-level opportunities for students. This year, several Year 11s took part in matches with the academy, impressing coaches with their technical skill and game intelligence. It’s a fantastic pathway for aspiring footballers.
Rounders was a hit this year with teams from Year 7 girls, Year 8, and Year 10 playing fixtures hosted at Highsted Grammar School. Each team competed with energy and determination, developing key skills and showing great teamwork in every game.
Our Sports Leaders completed the nationally recognised 1st4sport Level 1 Award for Activators (Multi-Skills) – a brilliant achievement that boosted their confidence, communication, and event management skills.
They also played a key role in organising a Primary Speed Stacking competition at Leigh Academy Minster, guiding younger pupils and helping deliver a smooth, fun-filled event. Their professionalism and maturity were outstanding.
In July, we’re excited to attend our first ever Leigh Academies Trust Sports Day, taking place at the Dartford Harriers Athletics Stadium. This promises to be an unforgettable event, bringing together students from across the Trust for a celebration of athletics, competition, and community.
Closer to home, we’ll also be hosting our inaugural Leigh Academy Minster Sports Day, where students will compete in a college showdown between Cody, Johnson, and Wright. Who will be crowned the first champions? Let the countdown begin!
Outside of competitions, we’ve had brilliant engagement in our weekly extra-curricular sports clubs. This year, students had the chance to take part in:
⚽ Football
🏸 Badminton
🏉 Rugby – Huge thanks to Sheppey RFC, who helped run the club and encouraged several students to join Sheppey Rugby Club in their own time.
🏏 Cricket
Pickleball
🏐 Netball
🏋️ Fitness Club
These clubs have provided great opportunities to develop skills, build friendships, and enjoy sport in a fun, supportive environment. A massive thank you to all students and staff involved!
👭 Year 7 Girls Rounders Tournament
In module 6 our year 7 girls rounders team went to Highsted to compete in the swale rounders tournament. The girls were excited for this as they have worked hard practicing all module in their PE lessons and at rounders club too. The first game we faced The Sittingbourne School which we beat six and a half rounders to three and a half, and the second game we faced Highsted which we beat eight rounders to four and a half. The girls displayed some great batting, as well as fielding to prevent the other schools from scoring many rounders. The girls should be extremely proud of themselves.
The girls that were part of the year 7 rounders team were: Millie G, Kayci H, Skylar C, Sienna G, Beau R, Isabella S, Ella S, Matilda S, Phoebe S.
To all our students – thank you for your energy, commitment, and teamwork. To our families and community partners – thank you for your ongoing support.
Enjoy a safe, active, and well-deserved summer break. We can’t wait to do it all again in 2025/26!

New Adventures Dance Workshop Inspires Our Students
We were delighted to welcome artists from Matthew Bourne’s world renowned dance company, New Adventures, in module 5; to lead a dance workshop with our pupils. Keen dancers from years 7-10 had the opportunity to learn from professional dancers associated with one of the UK’s most innovative and celebrated dance companies.
The workshop was a dynamic and engaging experience focusing on repertoire from the company’s recent tour of Swan Lake which the year 10 students have been studying for their BTEC course. The students were able to learn and explore Contemporary dance material from the piece whilst developing their own creative and expressive skills. They were challenged to explore new ways of moving and collaborate with their peers in a fun and supportive environment.
It was truly inspiring to witness our students demonstrating enthusiasm, commitment and open mindedness whilst learning about the creative processes of a professional dance company. Dancers Paul Smethurst and Isaac Bowry who led the workshop really enjoyed working with our students and were impressed with their creativity and talent,
A huge thank you to New Adventures for providing such a memorable and enriching experience for our students. We hope this has ignited even more passion for dance within them and perhaps even inspired some future performers!

Eastchurch Primary School Sports Day
Four of our year 10 Sports Leaders were asked to assist with the running of Eastchurch Primary Schools sports day. They were put with a class each tasked with running the activity and keeping track of the students' scores. The sports leaders were also supported with the races and keeping track of scores and revealing the winning house. Our students were also asked by members of Eastchurch Primary School staff for advice on how to improve and run their future sports day. The students received some fantastic feedback from the headteacher of Eastchurch Primary School: "I wanted to thank you for your support of our Sports Day today. I was so impressed with your students; they were respectful, attentive and provided such terrific support and encouragement to our children, some of whom find Sports Day a challenge and not a pleasure! I am working on that area of emotional resilience. Having played sports myself, I am quite competitive so I am keen for our children to be empowered by this. Your students were such a credit to your school and looked incredibly smart." The Sports Leaders that assisted with this event were Charlie R, Archie A, Lola R and Jude W.
Singing Stars!
The annual LAT staff awards were held on 10th July at Leigh Academy Strood. This year, there was a special pre-recorded segment featuring talented student singers from various LAT academies. Six students from Leigh Academy Minster were chosen to represent our academy: Ruby R (Year 11), Chrissy S (Year 11), Faith B (Year 11), Patience S (Year 10), Isla B (Year 10) and Ocean D (Year 7). The students were individually recorded singing ‘A Million Dreams' from The Greatest Showman and then performed the song to camera. The finished video was played at the awards ceremony and received a wonderful response from the audience. We are extremely proud of the students and look forward to sharing the finished video with the rest of our Academy!
Swale Great Big Summer Sing!
On Wednesday 2nd July, a small group of year 7 Cody students attended the Swale Great Big Summer Sing. They enjoyed a condensed version of The Magic Flute Opera and some spectacular performances from the Royal Ballet Opera vocalists. They then participated in some singing workshops with Cadenza Vocal, alongside 6 other schools. The day ended with some fantastic performances, including our talented students singing Die With a Smile. The students represented our academy extremely well throughout the day, and we were exceptionally proud of them all!
At Leigh Academy Minster, our Personal, Social, Health, and Economic (PSHE) education is a cornerstone of our commitment to nurturing well-rounded, responsible, and resilient young individuals. Our curriculum is thoughtfully designed to equip students with the essential knowledge, skills, and understanding they need to navigate the complexities of adolescence and beyond, preparing them to thrive in an ever-changing world.
Across Years 7, 8, and 9, our PSHE programme addresses vital themes, fostering critical thinking, empathy, and a strong sense of self and community.
What an incredible journey our students have been on through PSHE this year! Our Year 7s have truly excelled, building foundational resilience and becoming budding global citizens, confidently navigating mental well-being, digital choices, and their role in creating a sustainable future. Moving into Year 8, students have shown remarkable insight, grasping the complexities of global interconnectedness, understanding how cultural exchanges impact our world, and mastering effective communication to strengthen relationships. And in Year 9, we've seen fantastic maturity as they've tackled essential life topics, from understanding the effects of alcohol and deepening their resilience, to embracing healthy lifestyles and engaging critically with consent and healthy relationships, preparing them brilliantly for the exciting challenges ahead.
We are very proud of the engagement and maturity our students demonstrate in their PSHE lessons across all year groups. These units are not merely about acquiring knowledge; they are about fostering self-awareness, empathy, critical thinking, and a strong sense of personal and social responsibility. By engaging with these vital topics, our students are building the essential foundations they need to thrive as confident, compassionate, and contributing members of our community and the wider world.
As our students progress through Key Stage 4, their PSHE (Personal, Social, Health, and Economic) education at Leigh Academy Minster intensifies, addressing complex real-world issues and equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary for independent and responsible living. Our curriculum in Years 10 and 11 is designed to foster critical thinking, resilience, and a deep understanding of societal challenges and personal well-being.
Our Year 10 students have truly stepped up this year in PSHE, confidently tackling crucial contemporary challenges. They've shown remarkable maturity in exploring tough topics like exploitation, mental illness, and understanding various forms of influence, all while building essential skills for healthy relationships. Adding to this, their preparation for Work Experience has given them invaluable insights into the professional world. As for our Year 11s, they're shining as they prepare for their futures, masterfully reinforcing healthy lifestyles, delving into values and beliefs, developing vital skills for independence, while also honing their communication in wider relationships. We're incredibly proud of how well both year groups are embracing these vital life lessons!
The dedication and maturity shown by our Key Stage 4 students in engaging with these important PSHE themes is commendable. Our goal is to ensure they leave Leigh Academy Minster not only with academic achievements but also as confident, resilient, and responsible young adults, well-prepared for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
This year, our Key Stage 5 students at Leigh Academy Minster have truly embraced their PSHE education, engaging with vital topics that are shaping them into confident, resilient, and well-prepared young adults ready for life beyond the Academy. We are proud of their dedication and the insightful contributions they have made in these crucial sessions.
Our PSHE curriculum for Years 12 and 13 is designed to empower students with the essential skills and understanding needed to thrive in an ever-evolving world, whether they're heading to university, apprenticeships, or the workplace. Here's a look at some of the key areas they've explored:
Students have honed their communication skills, essential for all aspects of their lives. They've also cultivated a strong growth mindset, learning to embrace challenges and see opportunities for development in every experience. Looking ahead, a significant focus has been on planning for the future, providing them with the tools and guidance to make informed decisions about their next steps.
A core theme has been diversity and inclusion, fostering an understanding and appreciation of different perspectives, alongside a commitment to building respectful relationships in all their forms. We've also equipped students with the knowledge to make informed health choices and prioritise safety, ensuring their well-being remains a top priority.
Crucially, our students have built their personal resilience, learning strategies to navigate life's inevitable ups and downs, particularly when navigating uncertainty. Finally, a significant emphasis has been placed on practical life skills, with units dedicated to making sound financial choices – a vital preparation for independent living.
The maturity and thoughtful engagement our KS5 students have shown throughout these units have been exceptional. They are developing into articulate, responsible, and well-rounded individuals ready to make a positive impact. We look forward to seeing all they achieve as they embark on their exciting futures!
Modules 5 and 6 have been packed with exciting opportunities for students across all year groups to explore their future career paths. From dream jobs to real-world experiences, our students have been actively engaging with a wide range of career-focused initiatives.
Building Career Awareness Across Year Groups
During tutor time, students have been diving deep into career exploration. Our Year 7s have been looking at their "dream jobs," sparking early aspirations. Year 8s explored careers directly linked to their current subjects, helping them see the real-world application of their learning. Meanwhile, Year 9s have focused on different career types and how to navigate specific career paths, providing a practical look at their options.
University Insights and Aspirations
On May 2nd, we welcomed an ambassador from the University of Cambridge to the academy. Year 8 and 9 students in Cody College attended an assembly, gaining valuable insights into university life at Cambridge and potential routes to study there. Our Cody College Year 7s took part in engaging, interactive workshops, giving them a fantastic opportunity to ask questions and learn about higher education.
As part of our Cultural Capital week, the entire Year 9 cohort visited The University of the Creative Arts in Canterbury. This immersive day allowed students to experience university life firsthand, participate in workshops, speak with current students, and tour the campus.
First Annual Careers Fair a Resounding Success!
We were thrilled to host our first-ever Careers Fair on June 24th for Years 9, 10, and 12. The event was a huge success, with 30 local and national businesses, alongside various universities, setting up interactive stands in our sports hall. Students had an hour to visit the stands, engaging directly with representatives about different jobs and the skills and qualifications needed for various career pathways. It was an invaluable opportunity for our students to connect with professionals and gain practical advice.
Real-World Experience: Work Placements
Our Year 10 and 12 students have been busy with their work experience placements. Year 10s were out in the field from June 30th to July 4th, while Year 12s followed from July 14th to 18th. We're incredibly proud of our students who independently secured their placements and worked diligently to get everything ready. Tutor time was also dedicated to preparing them for these experiences, focusing on professional conduct, presentation, and how to maximise their learning from the week.
Encouraging Girls in STEM
On July 7th, a selection of Year 9 girls attended an inspiring "Engineering for Girls" event at SOAR Karting in Gillingham. They participated in workshops led by female engineers, understanding the importance of encouraging more girls to pursue careers in this vital field. The day concluded with an exciting karting session at SOAR!
Preparing for Post-GCSE Pathways: Year 10 Next Steps Day
In the final week of Module 6, our Year 10s participated in a crucial Next Steps Day. This event was designed to help them start thinking about their post-GCSE plans. Students spent time setting up their Kent Choices profiles, essential for applying for their post-16 studies. They also benefited from presentations on apprenticeships, Level 2 courses, and T-levels, alongside valuable insights from our university partners. Hewlett College also presented on the academy’s own Sixth Form provision and the International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme (IBCP) available at the academy, providing students with a comprehensive overview of their future options. MYP at Leigh Academy Minster
Dear Parents and Carers,
As we approach the end of the academic year, we would like to take this opportunity to update you on the progress and impact of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP) that has been embedded across our curriculum this year.
It has been a genuine pleasure to witness the students develop not only in their academic abilities but also in their confidence and independence as learners. Over the course of the year, they have grown in their ability to take ownership of their learning, demonstrating increased self-awareness, resilience, and a proactive attitude towards their progress. It has been especially rewarding to see them embrace challenges, reflect thoughtfully on their development, and begin to recognise their own potential for success.
The MYP is a globally recognised framework designed for students aged 11 to 14. It encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world, supporting the development of critical thinking, intercultural understanding, and reflective learning.
Unlike traditional curricula, the MYP places a strong emphasis on not only what students learn, but also how they learn. It promotes inquiry-based learning, global contexts, and interdisciplinary connections, skills and mindsets that are essential in the modern world.
Through the MYP, students continue to access a broad and balanced curriculum. They study eight subject groups:
Language and Literature
Language Acquisition (Modern Foreign Languages)
Individuals and Societies (Humanities)
Sciences
Mathematics
Art
Physical and Health Education
Design (Food and Design Technology)
Performing Arts (Drama and Music)
Each subject is taught through an MYP lens, which includes real-world application, concept-based learning, and a focus on developing key Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills such as communication, research, thinking, and self-management.
The MYP provides students with a strong foundation for success in their future studies—whether that be GCSEs, A-levels, the IB Diploma Programme, or other post-16 qualifications. It fosters independent learning, problem-solving, and a deeper understanding of subject content. These skills are not only beneficial academically, but also prepare students for life beyond the classroom.
We are already seeing increased levels of student engagement, more thoughtful learning conversations, and growing confidence in key skills that will support them throughout their education journey.
We are pleased to report that the end-of-year assessments and reports reflect the positive impact of the MYP framework on student progress. Students have embraced the challenge of applying their learning in new and creative ways, and it has been incredibly rewarding to see their development across all subject areas.
Thank you for supporting your child’s learning journey this year. Your encouragement and partnership have played a vital role in helping students adapt to and succeed within the MYP structure.
Finally, we would like to extend our sincere thanks to all parents and carers for your continued support throughout this academic year. As we look ahead, we are excited to continue building on the success of the MYP and working together to ensure the very best outcomes for all our students.
As the school year winds down and summer approaches, we know you're all looking forward to a well-deserved break! Your Chromebooks will be going home with you, and we want to remind everyone about the importance of looking after them and using them responsibly throughout the holidays.
Keeping Your Chromebook Safe:
Handle with Care: Your Chromebook is a valuable learning tool. Please avoid dropping it, placing heavy objects on it, or exposing it to extreme temperatures or liquids.
Charge Regularly: Make sure your Chromebook is charged and ready for use, even if it's just for a quick check-in or accessing resources.
Store Securely: When not in use, keep your Chromebook in a safe place where it won't be easily damaged or lost.
Responsible Use - Even During Summer:
Remember that your Chromebooks are provided for educational purposes. Even though it's summer, the school's online monitoring system remains active. This means that anything concerning, including inappropriate content or behaviour, will still be flagged with our safeguarding team. It's crucial to continue using your Chromebooks respectfully and responsibly, just as you would during term time.
We want you to have a fantastic and safe summer! By taking good care of your Chromebook and using it wisely, you'll ensure it's ready for another successful year of learning when we return.
Across the course of M5 and M6, the academy prefect team has been instrumental in working alongside the senior leadership team in order to shape the culture within their academy. The prefect team have admirably taken on board the views of their peers within their tutor groups and ensured that their voice has been heard. The academy has been able to work alongside the students and respond to their views accordingly. Some of the highlights have been the purchasing of brand new keyboards within the Music department to replace some of the older keyboards that the academy inherited in the changeover, the ordering and placing of additional sanitary bins to ensure that every toilet cubicle in the academy is fully functional for all students to feel comfortable and also added additional extra curricular activities where there was a desire from students.
The key stage 3 prefect team have helped with the shaping of competitions between colleges for the 2025 - 2026 academic year. All prefects collated ideas from their peers and, working alongside the senior leadership team, have ensure that there will be a wide range of competitions incorporating all subject areas of the academy beginning in September 2025. This will further increase the already strong sense of belonging and community that students have within their college. At the end of the next academic year, one of the four colleges will be crowned the winner of the inaugural award.
Student Leadership continues to grow and we have received a fantastic number of applications from pupils across the academy for a wide range of leadership opportunities. These leadership roles will be performed from the beginning of September. Successful applicants will be announced on our return from the summer break.
During the six week summer break the academy will be closed. Please be aware that there are support groups that operate throughout the whole holiday should you need to reach out:
Sheppey Matters prepares, cooks and provides free hot meals every week, available at The Healthy Living Centre in Sheerness.
Swale Food Bank operates from The Healthy Living Centre in Sheerness available to those who need extra support.
In addition to this, Community Wardrobe which offers access to free school uniform, runs from The Healthy Living Centre Sheerness.
