When we need to meet virtually, this is the link to our Zoom Meeting
Land and homesite evaluation is a training method similar to livestock evaluation, using classes of “fields” instead of classes of animals. “Fields” are evaluated according to established criteria for their suitability and limitations for various uses. The term “field” refers to a plot of land 100 feet square selected from a uniform portion of a farm or other area. Land and homesite evaluation consists of five “fields" (four at nationals). Participants evaluate “fields” using the criteria in this handbook and by recording their evaluations and interpretations on the scorecards. Only those features within the boundaries of the “fields” will be considered in evaluating each field.
The soil profile is exposed to allow participants to examine soil depth, topsoil depth, and soil structure. Topsoil and subsoil samples will be placed in containers near the pit for determination of textures and permeability. Official scoring of the fields is by a qualified evaluator(s). Qualified evaluators may include one or more soil scientists, extension educators, agricultural science and technology instructors, soil conservationists, or any other individuals who understand the criteria in the handbook. The evaluators set climatic conditions, soil test information, and other factors that are not obvious. The conditions are given on a placard located at each siteÂ
State -- You will have five "fields" or pits to complete. Three will use the land site evaluation scorecard. Two will use the homesite evaluation scorecard. Land site is worth 75 points each (225 total), while homesite is worth 100 points each (200 total).Â
Nationals -- You will have four "fields" or pits to complete. You will fill out the land site and homesite scorecard at each pit. These are two separate events, therefore, you could place top in land site and rank at the bottom in homesite. The land site contest includes four pits, each worth 75 points (300 points total). The homesite contest includes four pits, each worth 97 points (388 total).
