This will give you a pretty good understanding of the basic tools you have available. SolidWorks® is a very hands on program to learn. The only way to improve your skills with it is to just keep creating with it.
When SolidWorks® loads click on resources (The house on the right.) Then under curriculum click on tutorials to load this menu.
These are my recommend tool bars to have. You can add them by going to View, Tool Bars then selecting them. If it's a common tool you find your self using it's a good idea to have it easily available. Pretty much all tools in SolidWorks® are available in many locations within the program. This will make your UI customized to the best way you work.
All ways make sure your in the correct units when starting a new part this can be changed in the bottom of the screen. (Right)
You can change global default settings for your SolidWorks® by going to options in the Gear icon drop down menu. (Left)

It be worth checking to see if your college of choice provides Solidworks® licenses for students. The School of Mines and Technology will under The Industrial Engineering and Mechanical Engineering degrees.
