Teach reading better by teaching the English language: what, why and how!
A spelling inventory is a quick assessment given to kids (either whole group, small group or 1:1) to assess their spelling and encoding skills. Using a published spelling inventory (see Words Their Way inventories linked in this document), the teacher dictates each word, beginning with simple words and moving to more complex words. As the teacher dictates words one-by-one, the students write the words. The student writing is then analyzed to determine the students’ understanding of language and to pinpoint what a student knows and doesn’t know with regards to spelling patterns and words.

Why should you use a spelling inventory with your students? Learners who can spell can read, but readers cannot always spell.
