The history of the world is largely written by warfare. From the nations we live in, the laws we follow, to the clothes we wear, food we eat, and money we spend, our lives are shaped by the conflicts that created and destroyed nations. History is replete with such titanic struggles. Conflicts such as the Great War, the Second World War, the American Civil War, and Vietnam offer us valuable insight into the history of the world, society, global relations, and the world we live in today.
In this course, we will examine warfare from several different dimensions. While we will consider the major battles and tactics of warfare, we will expand our scope beyond these. We will also examine the complex political and social nature of warfare’s history. How war has changed and challenged nations and communities. How war was experienced by soldiers and civilians. Why wars were (and are) fought, and how they ended. And finally, how conflicts have shaped the world we live in today.
Major focuses:
The Napoleonic Wars
The American Civil War
The First World War
