It was a strong day for the lady whippets at the Crete Invitational, featuring some of the top Eastern Nebraska teams and plenty of Class A firepower. In all five girls earned medals and finished in ninth place as a team, led by a championship performance by Keira Crane.
Keira notched four wins by fall, all in the first period. Her first win also was her 50th career win, a remarkable accomplishment for the young sophomore. The second win was even better as she pinned her opponent in 8 seconds, beating the previous record of 11 seconds held by Savannah Koch. In the finals, she easily dispatched B#9 Gress to continue her case as the top wrestler in Class B.
Brinley Pohl, who medaled with a 5th place finish, also got her name into the record books. Her third round win by technical fall brought her into a tie for 4th place in the season and career records for the school.
Other medalists include Ella Warburton (6th), Cristal Gonzalez (6th), and Marlie Petersen, who rattled off 4 straight wins after a quarterfinal loss to finish in 3rd place.
The whippets will compete next week in the Flatwater Fracas dual tournament on Friday and Saturday as their last competition before winter break. There has been a lot of growth and improvement in this young squad each week, which is always encouraging and exciting as February draws closer!
