1. Student Responsibilities
Students are responsible for...
always having a well-maintained instrument available to play at all rehearsals, lessons, and performances
all necessary accessories their instrument may use (list of those necessary accessories is listed under “Equipment”)
preparing for their rehearsals, lessons, and performances through good, disciplined practice habits based on the practice guidelines
having a positive attitude about music and be ready to learn and have fun day in, day out
observing proper rehearsal etiquette (waiting to be called upon before speaking, listening attentively, and following instructions)
2. Practice
As with any other discipline, learning to play an instrument takes practice. While there is no exact number of minutes of practice that will fit all students, it is imperative that students spend enough time practicing at home to play their music correctly at school.
Being a member of the band involves responsibility to the rest of the group. There is a practice minimum that is required of students in order to keep their playing “chops” in shape.
Students should practice for 20-30 minutes, 3 to 4 days a week. (To maintain the skills and techniques we develop in class)
Practice journals will be assigned to the class as needed. It is the expectation for every student involved in band class to practice at home outside of class.
3. Grading Policy
Students will receive a grade in band. This grade will include:
Written Quizzes
Playing Tests
Make Music Homework
Daily Performance
Performance Attendance
All assignments are to be turned in on the day they are due. If a student misses a lesson when a quiz or playing exam is given, it is their responsibility to ensure the quiz or playing exam is made up in a timely manner.
Performance attendance is mandatory and failure to attend a performance will impact a student’s grade. However, certain occasions, per the discretion of the Director, may be considered an excused absence. If a student would like to apply for an excused absence, he/she/they must complete the excused absence form and return it to Ms. Tadey and Mr. Duffy a minimum of two weeks before the performance. An application does not guarantee an excused absence will be granted.
4. Performance Attire/Concert Etiquette
Concert Attire:
black shoes
black socks
black bottoms (no jeans)
white collared shirt on top
All clothing must comply with the school dress code. Shirts should have sleeves and should cover the midriff. (no writing or images)
