January Monthly Events
National Braille Literacy Month. January aims to educate people about the importance and advantages of Braille literacy. Now that Braille has been incorporated into digital devices and computers, it has become more accessible and relevant to the present technology-driven world. We have numerous teaching resources in our Library Padlet that can be found on the Library Lesson Plan website.
National Mentoring Month. Each January, we come together as a community to ignite those passions and help turn those wildest dreams into reality with National Mentoring Month. By harnessing our collective voice, MENTOR advocates for mentorship, legislative priorities, and raises awareness for how one conversation, one experience, and one mentor can change a young person’s life. Christine Carrillo at Greenfield Bilingual Second Graders read the story, Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner. The story shows how Snowmen come alive at night and are quite “active”. Our students had to design their version of their snowmen being “active” at night.
Tracy Raasch at MacDowell Montessori collaborated with the middle school science teacher during her ecology unit! Her students read 8 Climate Education books. They worked in groups to design and create their own picture books to synthesize the information they learned.
Christine Carrillo at Greenfield Bilingual had the 3rd-grade Bilingual students take the Keva Plank challenge and construct various structures from skyscrapers to bridges and of course, a beautiful flower!
Laura Vanderbilt at Story shared pics of their 5th graders making a Keva block creation and working on Snap Circuits during makerspace time.
The first-grade Bilingual students at Greenfield are busy reading library books to their Book Buddies. They tell their book buddy [hand-held puppets] all about the events of the story from cover to cover!
Abby Rose at Garland teamed up with the Social Studies teacher and held a debate in the library with middle schoolers. (you can find the full lesson plan here).
The K - 2nd graders at Greenfield Bilingual read a new book by Peter Reynolds, All I Need is Love and a Soft Pillow. After the story they completed the sentence stem, All I need is love and _______. They created a special message for the people that they love! Awesome job!
