Dear Rufus King International Middle School Students and Families,

Welcome to your Community Project! This is an opportunity to change the world. As an eighth grader in the IB Middle Years Program (IB MYP), your student will be required to complete a Community Project, a culminating activity which displays knowledge learned throughout their IB MYP experience. As a sixth grader the project is introduced, and the grade level will work on the same project. Each of the four seventh grade classes will choose a different project topic.

The Community Project must be inspired by one of the Global Contexts in addition to the Approaches to Learning. This is a community focused project to develop awareness of needs in the community and how you can help to bring awareness to the needs.

Each student will work with their ELO/ACP teacher and grade 8 students may be assigned a Community Project advisor to help guide him/her through the process. Grade 8 students may work alone or in a group of two or three students. Students will meet with their advisors during IB Thursday time to complete the project. Students are encouraged to work outside of school on their project. Grades 6 and 7 will also be responsible for completing projects that will be directed by their teachers.

The weekly lessons for students have been carefully designed to help guide him/her during this exciting and challenging adventure. If your student needs assistance with their Community Project, please have him/her speak to their teachers, or email the Community Project Coordinator (Mrs. Phillips – phillivv@milwaukee.k12.wi.us). These resources are here to help, so be sure to use them.

Students, apply the skills you have learned throughout your IB MYP journey, use your process journal, meet with your supervisor regularly, and follow the timeline that has been given to you; it will help you stay on track and not fall behind. Most importantly have fun! This is a project that has special, personal meaning to you.
