Impress College Admissions
Colleges look for Advanced Placement courses on your high school transcript as evidence you are willing to challenge yourself with college-level coursework and expectations. Deciding to take an AP course and strive for a score of 3, 4, or 5 on the AP exam shows you have a serious interest in college and would be a strong candidate for their college.
The Advanced Placement program consistently messages to colleges you are experiencing a rigorous course congruent to a college experience. Your AP teachers are trained to implement a curriculum that meets college standards. When an admissions office sees “AP” on your transcript there is an understanding of the academic rigor you’ve experienced.
Earn College Credits
Taking AP courses and attempting the AP exams gives you an advantage. If you score a 3, 4, or 5 on an exam you could start college with free college credits. Ninety percent of colleges and universities accept AP college credits on high school transcripts. AP credits could save you thousands of dollars in college tuition.
If you know what you want to major in at college, taking an AP course related to that major and earning a 3, 4, or 5 on the AP exam can help you gain advanced placement out of introductory college courses. It is possible you could skip some first year courses and enter directly into upper level courses.
AP courses unrelated to your major may satisfy your college’s general education credits, leaving you time on your schedule to pursue a double major, minor or other opportunities.
