Dear Greenfield School Families,
As Greenfield’s full time teacher-librarian, I am thrilled to start another year with your child. We have many exciting activities planned for this year. Focusing our school year on multicultural stories, great leaders, and world issues, and holding a Dr. Seuss Celebration along with two Scholastic Book Fairs, I look forward to working with all of our Greenfield families.
Students in grades K-8 will have library class once a week for at least 45 minutes. Library classes follow a set curriculum and offer our students the opportunity to become "effective users of ideas and information”. I work closely with teachers to integrate library skills and materials into the core curriculum. At all grade levels, the teachers and teacher-librarian work together to reinforce appropriate reading strategies and encourage self-selection of library materials.
Students in grades K4-2 typically participate in read-aloud story times that introduce them to fiction/nonfiction, literary genres, authors, foundations of research, parts of a book, and basic knowledge of library organization.
Those in grades 3-5 receive instruction in introductory research and reference skills integrating the science and social disciplines often with the use of educational technology. These sessions enable our students to grow and develop as independent and critical readers and users of library and information resources.
Students in grades 6-8 will engage in higher-level content area studies across the disciplines to create products with new knowledge as writers, artists, storytellers, and digital citizens.
My goal is to provide a vital combination of resources, curriculum, activities, and professional expertise that help students acquire not just information, but the skills and judgment to make good use of that information. Most importantly, I strive to make learning fun.
I look forward to working with your children and you,
Mr. Kelnhofer

Almost 10 years before Brown vs. Board of Education, Sylvia Mendez and her parents helped end school segregation in California. An American citizen of Mexican and Puerto Rican heritage who spoke and wrote perfect English, Mendez was denied enrollment to a “Whites only” school. Her parents took action by organizing the Hispanic community and filing a lawsuit in federal district court. Their success eventually brought an end to the era of segregated education in California.
