The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970, when a United States senator from Wisconsin organized a national demonstration to raise awareness about environmental issues. By 1990, Earth Day was an event celebrated by more than 140 countries around the globe. Teach students the importance of Earth Day is to protect the planet from things like pollution and deforestation. By taking part in activities like picking up litter and planting trees, we’re making our world a happier, healthier place to live. April is National Poetry Month, 30 days of celebrating the joy, expressiveness, and pure delight of poetry. Teach students about the National Poetry Month by getting to know some of our most well-loved children's poets. School Library Month is celebrated in April every year. Show students how libraries play an important role in their lives. Every April Autism Speaks celebrates World Autism Awareness Month beginning with United Nations-sanctioned World Autism Awareness Day on April 2. Throughout the month, we focus on coming together in unity and collaboration by fostering worldwide support, sharing stories and connecting to create a more inclusive world. During the month of April, we formally recognize the achievements of Arab Americans through the celebration of National Arab American Heritage Month (NAAHM). We have numerous teaching resources in our Library Padlet that can be found on the Library Lesson plan website, along with this choice board.
April is Scottish American Heritage Month. Almost 30 million U.S. citizen claim Scottish or Scottish-Irish heritage. We have numerous teaching resources in our Library Padlet that can be found on the Library Lesson plan website, along with this choice board.
The Defense Department celebrates the Month of the Military Child (MOMC) during the month of April. There are more than 1.6 million military children who face many challenges and unique experiences as a result of their parents' service. These amazing kids are strong, brave, proud, global. We celebrate their selflessness and sacrifice as they serve our country as part of a military family, not just in April, but all year long. Ramadan, one of the holiest months in the Islamic calendar. The beginning and the end of the month are determined by sightings of the moon (March 22 - April 21). Ramadan is the Arabic name for the ninth month in the Islamic calendar. It is considered one of the holiest months for Muslims.
