ESY services are Special Education and related services provided to students with disabilities beyond the typical 180 days of school.
“An extended school year program may be identified if the student has demonstrated or is likely to demonstrate substantial regression in his or her learning skills and/or substantial difficulty in relearning such skills if an extended program is not provided.” 603 CMR 28.05(4)(d)
Other Criteria and special circumstances:
The nature or severity of the student’s disability The student’s rate of progress
The student’s specific behavior and/or physical problems
The ability of the student to interact with non-disabled students
The areas of the student’s curriculum that need continuous attention
The student’s vocational needs The availability of alternative resources
ESY Service Delivery is determined on an individual basis, to meet the individual needs of each student. “Drop In” services are provided for students who may need OT, PT, Speech and Language, or Academic Support. “Programs” are more comprehensive services for students in specialized programs including Collaborative, REACH, Achieve, Launch etc.
Teams consider the need for ESY services on an annual basis
No. ESY services target only the areas where a student is at risk for substantial regression and/or substantial recoupment time.
No. The intended purpose of ESY services is to prevent substantial regression and to ensure maintenance of skill. ESY services are not intended to advance students in their IEP goals and objectives
No. It is a parent/guardian's right to chose whether your student participates in the services offered. If you do not plan on accessing offered services, please indicate that upon registration, or email esy@miltonps.org.
Yes! Please indicate on your child's registration if they will be attending MSE. We have High School Volunteers that are able to pick up and drop off students to MSE courses from their ESY services.
MARCH: Families of eligible students will be notified via email by their liaison. Please register your student ASAP using the link in email even if your child will not be accessing services. If you have questions or concerns about your child’s eligibility, please reach out to your Team Chair.
APRIL/MAY: The individualized details of your child’s ESY services- (e.g. timing, location) will be shared directly with your family by May 1st. If there are questions/concerns about scheduling, please reach out to esy@miltonps.org. Please note that while we understand that families and students have other commitments over the summer, it is not possible to accommodate all scheduling requests.
June 1st: Deadline to complete registration for ESY services.
July 7th: Programs begin!
