MATHEMATICS PROGRAM

The mathematics program at Milton High School consists of integrated math courses – offered at the college prep and honors level – during the first two years that address critical concepts in the areas of algebra, geometry, and statistics in alignment with the 2017 Massachusetts Mathematics Curriculum Framework (pp. 129-145). Students entering 11th grade are recommended, based on their 10th grade course and performance, for PreCalculus (AP or Honors), Algebra 2 (Honors or College Prep), or College Algebra A (College Prep), which provides students who need it with reinforcement and extension of algebraic concepts from their first two years. Senior year math course options include Calculus (AP BC, AP AB, or Honors), Statistics (AP or Honors), PreCalculus (AP or Honors) for students taking Algebra 2 in 11th grade, College Algebra B (College Prep), and Applied Mathematics (College Prep).

As the MHS Math Course Sequence Graphic indicates, students have a variety of opportunities to take AP, Honors, or College Prep level math courses (and move from one level to another) along a Pre-Calculus/ Calculus pathway for students who intend to pursue a STEM-related career in the future or a Statistics/ Applied Math/College Algebra pathway for students who intend to pursue a non-STEM related career in the future. Course recommendation placements are done by teachers using data and with the best interest of the student in mind to ensure success. Recommendation overrides are discouraged because they often result in the need for a schedule change during the school year.

Through our existing partnership with Quincy College, students enrolled in any of the following math courses at Milton High School are eligible to earn three college credits at a significantly reduced cost of $300 by earning a final grade of C or higher that are transferable to many colleges and universities: Honors PreCalculus, Honors Statistics, Honors Calculus, and College Algebra B.

All Milton High School students must pass the equivalent of four full-year math courses to meet the graduation requirement. Additionally, Milton High School offers a comprehensive computer science program featuring semester elective and AP courses for students to take throughout their four years. Please be aware that all AP math and computer science courses have a required summer assignment. Regardless of specific content or level, every math, as well as computer science, course at Milton High School features opportunities for students to use technology effectively, apply concepts to a real world context, and develop their critical thinking, reasoning, and problem solving skills.
