Love That Dirty Water: What it means to be from Boston

LOVE THAT DIRTY WATER: WHAT IT MEANS TO BE FROM BOSTON

Honors 13403 2.5 credits

Boston is not just a place on a map; it is a state of mind. From John Winthrop's call in 1630 for Boston to be "a city upon a hill" to today, the region has been home to some of the great names in poetry, literature, and songwriting. This course will explore what it means to be a writer, thinker, and artist from Boston. Readings progress chronologically, though as important current events arise they become part of our discussions. Continued skill development in composition, speaking, vocabulary, language, and literary and non-fiction studies are the essential components of this course. Areas of study include: Women of the 17th, 18th, and 19th Centuries; Fireside Poets and Brahmin Influence; and The Changes of the 20th Century.
