African-American Literature

AFRICAN AMERICAN LITERATURE Honors 13405 5 credits


  • This course celebrates a variety of literary forms ranging from the oral tradition of West African folklore to contemporary works with highly engaging subject matter. Students will explore voices such as James Baldwin, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Toni Morrison, Amiri Baraka, Toni Cade Bambara, and Brit Bennett through novels, novel excerpts, short stories, poetry and music. By analyzing thought-provoking texts on the African-American experience/s, students will express and develop their views about key past and present sociological issues and communicate insightful responses to key themes in African-American literature. Continued skill development in composition, speaking, vocabulary, language, and literary and non-fiction studies are the essential components of this course.
