Game that creates profit via ad revenue. Profits would then be directed towards nonprofits dedicated to ending poverty, world hunger, etc.
Creating a website that ads can be placed on is something that our coders aren't sure that they can do. Additionally, creating a site that utilizes currency creates a lot of extra challenges concerning laws and liabilities. We may end up doing this idea, but it would be extremely difficult to execute well.
App that connects queer people with queer friendly healthcare. Additionally, allows users to leave reviews and comments on their experiences with different doctors, hospitals, clinics, etc.
Anything concerning healthcare has a lot of firewalls to protect patient privacy so we may not be able to get the data we need. However, all licensed medical practitioners can be found online. This project hits close to home for several members of our team who are queer.
App that provides homeless youth resources based on their location and needs. Users would answer a short questionnaire about their situation and then be connected directly with shelters and support centers in their area. Additionally, users could communicate with one another to build support systems.
Creating a system that allows users to communicate in chat rooms is something that our coders are unsure that they can create. Additionally, for the purposes of this hackathon the project wouldn't make much sense as there would likely only be the few posts that our team could create in the limited time span we have.
App that allows users to input the ingredients that they have in their home to then be provided with health and cost conscious recipes. A focus on healthy eating, and a reduction of food waste. The app would then also connect users with links to places to purchase the remaining ingredients needed with a focus on ensuring that SNAP and EBT benefits are accepted at those vendors.
We enjoy this idea, but we're not entirely sure what category we would enter it in. Overall, it is our second choice idea, but there are other ideas that we have come up with that we like better.
Our team has elected to go with our second idea. This idea would be enterable in the sixth category: Health. Additionally, it is an app that we think would be especially useful given todays current political climate concerning LGBTQ+ Healthcare.
Elio focused on figuring out how to create a post database to hold the posts and comments that users would be able to leave.
Hailey focused on finding an API that would allow us to pull the data of all of the licensed medical practitioners
Jax assisted Hailey in her search for APIs and also began creating a workflow idea for the end goal website
Puck began researching queer healthcare statistics and outlining a presentation on the subject.
After an hour of work we realized that this idea is not currently possible for us to create. This is primarily due to the lack of available free APIs to access the necessary data. Additionally, we don't have the skills or the time to create a hostable posting and messaging database on the scale that we would need for this project to be viable.
After a long and thorough discussion our team has decided to take a step back from the queer healthcare website. While we think that it is still an incredibly important concept, we don't currently have the resources or time to actually create it. Instead, we have decided to move forward with the idea that was our original fourth idea. This idea focuses on creating easier access to healthy cost conscious recipes.
Elio will focus on creating an input system for the ingredients
Hailey will focus on finding and integrating a recipe API
Jax will focus on creating new images and assist Hailey and Elio in troubleshooting their coding
Puck will adjust the current website layout to account for our change in idea and will also begin researching our new topic to create a new presentation
Currently, all of the necessary data from the API is in our project. The entry for the ingredients is giving us some trouble be we think that we will be able to get it to work. We still have to incorporate SNAP and EBT price data, as well as work on what the front UI will look like.
Elio will continue to work on the ingredient entry
Hailey will find an API for the SNAP and EBT data
Jax will assist Elio with the ingredient entry and continue image work as we decide what the UI will look like
Puck will focus on what the UI design will look like and also finalize the background information presentation
We left Hailey's house at 11 pm and are planning on finalizing a few tasks individually before we meet up again tomorrow morning.
Elio will make the commands on the first page clickable buttons rather than keystrokes and will integrate the symbols for vegan, vegetarian, gluten free and dairy free
Hailey will finalize the data layout commands
Jax will finish the drawings for the app
Puck will ensure that the formatting for the website is finalized so that tomorrow we can easily input all of our information
We found that the API that we needed to be able to access SNAP and EBT brand price data was inaccessible to us. This meant that we are unable to include this information in our app. However, we were able to get data for the cost per serving of each meal which we feel is an acceptable compromise. Overall, today went really well and we are excited to continue working tomorrow.
10 AM Meet
12 AM Have app finished, turn attention to presentation
1:30 PM Submit presentation, allowing extra time for submission issues
2 PM Celebrate!
We definitely should have done more research between 10 am when the topics were released and 2 pm when the hackathon started to make sure that our original idea would be doable. This would have saved us a lot of time in the beginning of the day. Overall however we worked really well together. It was really useful to be in person together, even if we are competing virtually in the hackathon. Being in person together allowed us to communicate more effectively and also work more quickly. Today was a lot of fun, and we are looking forward to tomorrow!
Our group reconvened in the Student Center of our school at 10 am on Sunday. Elio was unable to attend today due to family commitments, but he put in a lot of work last night which puts us in a very solid place. Once we were all together we divvied up the remaining work that we had. We decided that we would work fairly individually for the next two hours and then come back together for the final two hours.
Hailey will focus on commenting the code to ensure that it is readable by anyone who looks at it so that the judges are able to understand all of our processes.
Jax will focus on the front end look of our app.
Puck will work on this website, the devpost presentation, the google slideshow and the video presentation.
Hailey will focus on finalizing the code and making sure that everything on the front end works the way it is supposed to.
Jax will focus on the video and theoretical advertising for our project.
Puck will work on the devpost presentation and the google slides presentation, as well as the integration of the code into the website.
