Community Engagement Programs and Partnerships

Community Engagement Programs and Partnerships
In the face of this pandemic, many of us may be feeling powerless while restricted to our homes. Even with these limitations, we can make a meaningful difference. We hope this information will give you the opportunity to educate yourself about the work of various community partners, how the covid19 crisis is impacting them, and how you might be able to help.
The list is organized into TWO categories:
· ACTIVE ENGAGEMENT
· MATERIAL and FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTIONS
As we receive news updates from our partners and community members, we will keep adding links to this website.
With best wishes for safety, compassion, and the strength of community near and far,
from all of us in CEPP

Even though 2020-2021 CEPP Board members are physical distancing right now,
we continue to engage with our partners and find new ways to support our community.
Rosie's Place is a sanctuary for poor and homeless women, where many of our Middle and Upper School students have served dinner over the years. While in person volunteering is still on hold, there are several ways to help: join in Census Phone Banking to make sure everyone gets counted in the 2020 Census! The City of Boston is hosting daily phone banks to reach out and encourage households in some of the lowest response neighborhoods to be counted. Sign up at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd8MweuEz3Y4t2mI08MoG9w93DmwguOKChMjxWi0FXPalKhlQ/viewform.
Or contribute to the Rosie's Place virtual food drive https://yougivegoods.com/drive-rpseptember, help provide masks http://www.rosiesplace.org/masks or care packages http://www.rosiesplace.org/carepackages
BCT's mission is to provide free, quality and accessible online tutoring to all elementary and middle school students regardless of their economic and immigration status, race, sex, etc. in the Greater Boston area. See their website for more information and to sign up as a volunteer.
Conrad Brown ('22) who volunteered with BCT this summer: "Tutoring for BCT has been a rewarding way to help younger students who are concerned about keeping up with their schoolwork during Covid. I especially enjoy seeing the kids’ enthusiasm as they work through a problem or master a new concept. I would encourage everyone to join who feels comfortable working with middle and elementary school students and wants to help children work through the challenges of remote learning." Feel free to email conrad_brown22@milton.edu if you would like more information.
This summer make phone calls to elderly neighbors in the town of Milton. They would love some more human contact as covid restrictions will not lift at Milton Residences for the Elderly for some time. You can spend just a few minutes per week or as much time as you like. Please signup on this short form
You can help Boston Public School children develop (or catch up on) their reading skills as they prepare for the new school year.
Volunteers can create videos of read aloud books or art/craft activities and these will be shared as extra practice and fun resources for the children. Here are instructions for creating and uploading your video. If you have any questions, email community_engagement@milton.edu
Find a local blood drive or Red Cross donation center and sign up for an appointment: www.redcross.org/give-blood.html The need is urgent. Students age 16 can donate with parent permission form. Be sure to check eligibility requirements with regard to height, weight, travel, etc.
In the past, a number of Milton students have volunteered with The Collateral Repair Project, an NGO in Jordan that works with urban refugees. One of their programs allows fluent English speakers (like yourselves!) from around the world to skype refugees and practice their conversation skills. Please email jana_amin21@milton.edu if you are interested in this opportunity.
Not only are skype sessions super flexible, but it is also not a huge time commitment and is extremely rewarding!
IFSI (Immigrant Family Services International https://www.ifsi-usa.org/about) is looking for volunteers available after school or on Saturdays to provide one on one academic support as well as musical instrument lessons. Tutors would commit to 1 hour long zoom sessions on a regular basis (1-3 days/week). If you are interested in signing up for IFSI, please email Community_Engagement@milton.edu.
Remember Dr. Martin Luther King's Poor People's Campaign? june2020.org organized a virtual event the Poor People's Mass Assembly and Moral March on Washington which was broadcast Sat, 6/20 at 10:00am and 6:00pm and Sun, 6/21 at 6:00pm EST. It was be a "multiracial moral fusion coalition of poor and low-income people sharing their struggles, committing to build power, and presenting a comprehensive policy agenda and budget designed to heal the wounds of the nation and build power of the poor by registering people for a movement that votes. The focus of the event is to demand that the nation address systemic racism, poverty, ecological devastation, war economy and the distorted moral narrative of religious nationalism." Learn more about their ongoing work at their website.
