Pledge of Allegiance

My work for this series aims to capture the state of America at this point in time. For this project, I photographed graffiti and other street art from various locations in the greater Boston area to capture unique voices from my community. I then worked with photoshop to combine and layer these images into a more cohesive look at what scattered voices think of our time.

My concentration series explores the unseen struggles women face by exposing the dark side of Barbie. With digital photography as my medium, I combined on-location base shots with studio-shot elements to balance the real and the fake. Because of Barbie's unrealistic beauty standard and plastered smiles, I and other girls have grown up thinking that women must conform to these levels of perfection, when in reality that perfection is only a facade. These complementary yet contrasting diptychs portray that public perfection in conjunction with what women may face when no one is watching.

I only spoke to him once really: when we were seated next to each other at Thanksgiving. He was just discharged from rehab for heroin. Recently, he was really into gardening and started selling bouquets of wildflowers. I guess this is my tribute to him. How do we decorate memorials for the dead?
