Letters and Sounds are the beginning stages of reading. While most students will be able to recognize and name letters, the corresponding sounds are explicitly taught using a variety of methods. One approach incorporates a visual picture representation for each letter/sound and a story for each letter character. The focus of the method is the sound. Lively Letters (Telian) also uses multi-sensory approach to relating plain letter text to sounds (letter/sound correspondence).
As children learn to read, they will begin to blend (link) the individual sounds together to form words. Students will be using the technique of finger blending/spelling in the classroom. This is when a student puts up one finger up for each sound in a word, starting with the thumb.
