AP STUDIO ART I  (2D)

(aka AP 2D Art & Design I)
Year Course - Level of Instruction: AP – Credit Value: 5.0
Prerequisite: Honors Art I Drawing/2D and departmental recommendation
Offered to students in grades 10, 11 & 12


AP Studio Art I is a highly demanding course open to students who have completed 2D Honors Art I, and is  suited for students who have demonstrated a high level of skill in observational drawing and are extremely self-motivated. Students should plan to spend significant time on projects outside of class. Creative thinking is highly stressed as students develop unique visual solutions to creative challenges. Students must maintain a grade of B or better to remain in the course. Successful completion of this course, and departmental approval, is required to move to AP Studio Art II. Weekly sketchbook work and periodic written assignments are included in the course, and finished work is due approximately every other week. Summer work is required as well.  This course is the first half of the College Board portfolio, and students will submit the following year in AP Studio Art II.

Students advance their observational drawing skills throughout the course while also utilizing their drawings to experiment with media and creative approaches.

Students engage in a deep dive into the development of observation drawing as they develop the ability to see and interpret their observations in new ways.

AP STUDIO ART  II  (2D)

Offered to students in grades 11 & 12


AP Studio Art II is a highly demanding course where students create an inquiry-driven independent body of work referred to as the "Sustained Investigation" and focuses on the deep exploration of a student-chosen theme through the development of approximately 10  pieces of art. Students are required to document the process of their experience, including their research, exploration, practice and revision. The completed portfolio must be submitted to the College Board in the spring in order to pass the course. This course is suitable for students who are extremely self-motivated, committed to devoting time into their work, and have a passion for personal growth, exploration and expression through drawing related media. Students must maintain a grade of B or better to remain in the course, and must complete summer work before beginning the course. Students are required to participate in the Annual AP Studio Art Show, and are also required to participate in various art competitions, visit and report on exhibit and museum visits and maintain an active sketchbook.

EXPLORING AN INDIVIDUAL LINE OF INQUIRY

Students explore their Sustained Investigation by experimenting with a variety of approaches that are each inspired by previous experience.

As students develop their portfolios they will determine if they are expressing their art through the lens of Drawing or 2D Design. 

This decision is made in consultation with the instructor and does not have to be made prior to beginning the course.

ART CONSORTIUM (2D)

Year Course - Level of Instruction: ACC - Credit Value: 5.0

Prerequisite: Honors Level or AP Level Art class and Dept recommendation.  Open to Seniors only.

Art Consortium is an accelerated level art course specifically designed for seniors who are used to working at an accelerated level or above in their prior art courses. This course provides a high-level, multimedia experience intended to expand the students’ art experience in both 2D and 3D media. Projects include creating a sculpted maquette and diorama, developing a piece of wearable art, working with a teacher/client to develop a site- specific work of art for the school, and exploring a variety of printmaking techniques. Students should be self-motivated, willing to devote some time outside of class and excited to challenge themselves creatively and independently throughout the year. There is no summer work required for this course.

WEARABLE ART

Students explore the ways and reasons that humans adorn themselves and then create a unique piece of wearable art that addresses a specific theme. 

SITE SPECIFIC ARTWORK

Students explore the field of Public Art by creating a site-specific work of art for a faculty "client". 


FIGURATIVE MAQUETTE AND DIORAMA

Students create a 3D figure and environment as they emulate the work of stop motion animators. 

PRINTMAKING

Students explore various methods of traditional and innovative printmaking.
