The Society for Military Psychology is pleased to announce the Military Psychology Research Grant Program to stimulate, promote, and support cutting-edge research that advances the science of military psychology. Individual awards may be given for research within any area military psychology for up to $2,000.
Please review the grant eligibility, proposal requirements, and evaluation criteria before starting your application.
Be a current member (e.g., members/associate/fellow) or affiliate member (international/professional) of the Society for Military Psychology (APA Division 19)
Have a doctoral degree at the time of application
Not be a student (Students are not eligible to apply for this award but should apply to the Student Research Grant Program)
Agree to complete a 6-month and 12-month report on the progress of your award
Note: We encourage awardees to present at Division 19’s annual meeting at the American Psychological Association Convention or a Division 19 sponsored research event.
Proposals will be evaluated by a committee of scientific peers to determine which efforts are of highest quality to merit grant support. The following criteria will be used to evaluate each proposal:
1. Research approach: An assessment of the overall quality of the conceptual framework, design, methods, and planned analyses. Relevance: Does the proposed research address a relevant topic for the science of military psychology?
2. Significance: Does the proposal address an important problem relevant to both the academic and practitioner membership of the Society for Military Psychology? Will the proposal advance knowledge and practice in a given area?
3. Innovativeness: Does the proposed research employ novel concepts, approaches or methods? Does the proposal research have original and innovative aims?
4. Realism (Feasibility): Will the project be completed within one year of award date?
5. Appropriateness of budget: Is there clear justification and rationale for the expenditure of the award monies? Can the proposed work be accomplished with the funds requested or is there evidence that additional expenses will be covered by other sources of funding?
NOTE//Read carefully: application instructions have been updated on 23 APR to indicate that references do not count toward page limits and only the proposal needs to be double-spaced. Thank you!
Proposals should be concise and convey concepts in simple terms, but with sufficient detail to achieve clarity; and be prepared in accordance with the latest edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association.
All required documents must:
• use 12-point font with 1” margins (note: double spacing only required for Proposal)
• be provided in Word doc or docx documents with numbered pages
• be labeled using the following naming convention: Last Name, First Initial, Year, Document Name
The two required documents (page limits) are as follows:
1. Proposal (15-pages) + References (no page limit) must use include the following components:
• Cover Sheet: Contains the title of the proposal, investigator’s name, address, telephone, and email.
• Abstract: Summarizes the proposed research in no more than 100 words.
• Introduction: Describes the project purposes, theoretical rationale, and proposed hypotheses or research questions to be investigated; summarizes existing knowledge on the proposed topic; articulates well-stated research questions/hypotheses; identifies the contributions of the study; and explains why the contribution is important in advancing the field.
• Methods: Provides an adequate description of proposed participants (including relevant demographic and/or military background characteristics), all measured variables; study procedures, and the status of any required human subjects review process (which must be satisfactorily completed and a signed approval letter submitted to the award committee before grant funds can be awarded).
• Analytic Plan: Describes relevant descriptive and inferential statistical analyses proposed to test hypotheses/research questions. Power analyses must be incorporated into the description of the analyses to ensure that sample size concerns have been planned for in advance.
• Significance to the Science of Military Psychology: Addresses the implications of the findings or conclusions for the science of military psychology.
• Program Plan: Outlines an overall project plan, defined deliverables, schedule of performance, requested funding amount (up to $2,000), and detailed budget. Acknowledges any other funding sources contributed to the project, especially if the funding required exceeds the amount offered by Division 19. The Society for Military Psychology does not pay university overhead/indirect effects.

2. Resume/CV(s) (2-pages per Resume): Required for the lead investigator(s). If there are more than one investigator, resumes should be bundled in a single document. Double or single-spacing allowed.
