Multiple factors can contribute to cognitive decline (e.g., traumatic brain injuries, addictions, mild cognitive impairment). Compensatory Cognitive Training (CCT) is an evidence-based cognitive rehabilitation intervention designed to support an individual's overall independence and quality of life. Compensatory cognitive skills training emphasizes teaching individuals internal, external, and environmental strategies for improving memory, attention, and executive functioning.
CCT is a brief, patient-centered, holistic/comprehensive, multi-modal, behavioral intervention developed by Dr. Elizabeth Twamley, Dr. Marilyn Huckans, and colleagues. CCT includes cognitive training, psychotherapeutic techniques, and lifestyle techniques and teaches individuals skills to address attention, memory and executive function problems. CCT also incorporates day planner/calendar training, brief mindfulness-based stress reduction exercises to improve cognition and general health. Sessions also provide psychoeducation on the targeted concern (e.g., PASC, TBI, MCI, etc.) and evaluate the risk and protective factors associated with cognitive decline.
A neuropsychological evaluation is a test to measure how well a person's brain is working. The abilities tested include reading, language usage, attention, learning, processing speed, reasoning, remembering, problem-solving, mood and personality and more. Neuropsychological evaluation can help with with diagnosis, treatment, or other recommendations.
The neuropsychologist will first meet with you and ask questions to get an understanding of your situation and concerns. Then you will complete tests typically involving writing or drawing, solving puzzles or answering questions, and responding to things presented on a computer. Finally, the neuropsychologist will write up the overall findings in a report and will go over the results and recommendations with you.
