Khan Academy Information

Khan Academy is an online personal learning resource that offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a learning dashboard that empowers learners to study at their own. Encourage your child to have fun with this individualized, online summer math study!

How much time should I spend on this?

  • Students should use Khan for about one hour each week.
  • Students are not expected to "finish" all their missions
  • Students can access their number of minutes completed on Khan Academy by clicking the "progress" tab.
  • We strongly recommend students divide the time over the 11 weeks of summer and split the time between days. Spreading out the practice will help solidify these essential skills.

How does Khan academy work?

  • Khan refers to levels as “missions”. Students should select the mission that would have them practicing skills taught THIS past year, not the year they are entering. Details are included in attached directions.

My child has never used Khan Academy. How do I create an account?

  • Follow directions in this document.
  • Parents can also create a parent account on Khan Academy and from the parent account create an account for their child. See this link for more information.

Can I use my current Khan Academy Account?

  • Yes, students may have a Khan Academy Account that they have been using this year. They should continue to use the same account.
  • If the student has completed the Mission before the summer it is recommended that they review the mission by using the Mastery Challenges. The Mastery Challenges will give the student problems to review and provide feedback on skills that they should review.

Can parents monitor student work?

  • Yes, parents can support their student by becoming a "coach" on the account and monitoring student progress.
  • To do this, the parent will need to create their own Khan Academy Account using a personal email address.
  • Once an account is created, the parent can follow this link to the Khan Academy website with directions on how to add themselves as a coach to their student's account.

Which mission do I choose?

  • Choose the mission for the subject or grade you just completed. For example, if you are going into 4th grade, then you choose the 3rd grade mission, if you are going into Geometry, you will choose the Algebra mission.

My child is struggling to get 5 in a row correct. What should he/she do?

  • Working out the solutions on paper before entering them in can help you to get the correct solution.
  • Make sure to check your work when ever possible before entering into the computer.
  • Do the problem twice and make sure you get the same answer.
  • Review the videos with the sample problems and try working them out on paper.
  • If your child is struggling to get a certain set of problems encourage them to look at an easier set first. Once they achieve success the other problems won’t look as bad.

Does Khan academy work on tablets?

  • Yes! Khan Academy has an official iPad app, iPhone app, Windows 8 app and Android app.
  • However, the iPad app is the most comprehensive of the 3

How will my teacher see this work when I return to school in the fall?

  • Your child will add their fall teacher as a "coach" when they return to school
  • Your child’s 2017-18 teacher will be able to view the amount of time students used Khan, the skills practice and progress made on their mission.
