Quick and Easy Ways to support literacy and learning at home:
Fourth grade students are at the point where they are reading to learn, so building comprehension and vocabulary are important.
Work on being able to summarizing the main idea of what they read
If reading a chapter book, have them summarize what was the important event that happened in that chapter
Being able to compare and contrast books, ideas, opinions, and authors
One way to do this would be to read a book that has been made into a movie and then ask them to compare the book to the movie. What was the same/different?
Building comprehension through questioning
Asking why questions to encourage deeper thinking, 'Why do you think the character acted that way?' or 'Why do you think that event occurred?'
Note-taking for grade 4 students
Daily conversations about their day, what they did, best part of their day, who they played with, what they ate, etc.
