Obtaining an Instrument

Students participating in the instrumental music program will need to obtain an instrument. Renting an instrument can be an overwhelming experience as there are many brands of instruments as well as necessary supplies. Please refer to the "Instrument Music Stores" page to view a list of area music stores from which you can rent an instrument . Please keep in mind that renting an instrument is much like leasing a car. You get what you pay for! Ask questions and when possible, think of what your child will need long term. If you have access to a used instrument and are able to circumvent the rental process, take the time to have your instrument overhauled at a store that does repair. The most important ingredient for a student’s success is the quality and working condition of the instrument they have.

**** String students must be sized (fitted) before renting a string instrument! The rental company or music store should be able to determine the appropriate instrument size for your child. Mr. Burns or Mrs. Karlan (your strings teacher) are also available, if you need your child measured. ****

We recommend renting, not buying, because:

  • Music stores will fix problems with the instrument if an accident occurs

  • It is easy to exchange sizes when students get older (for string instruments)

  • The quality of the instruments are much better than those purchased online in most cases.

Questions to Ask When Renting:

  • Is the instrument new or used? If used, how old is it?

  • What type of repair, maintenance, or service is included with the rental plan?

  • Are repairs done on site?

  • Do you have a rent to own plan?

  • Do you rent intermediate instruments?

  • Can I upgrade the instrument prior to final purchase?

  • Do you carry the instrument brands recommended by my child’s music teacher?

  • What if my child switches instruments?

Recommended Instruments & Supply Checklist

  • Please purchase our new method book, Sound Innovations by Robert Sheldon and Peter Boonshaft (Alfred Publishing) for your child's chosen instrument. For example: Concert Band- "flute" or String Orchestra - "violin". This book can be purchased at most music stores and many places online as well.

  • It is recommended that students purchase a folding music stand to assist when practicing at home.

  • String students are required to purchase a shoulder rest or shoulder sponge for Violin and Viola, cello strap for cello, and a rockstop for string bass.

  • Band students are recommended to purchase a box of #2 reeds for clarinet or alto saxophone, a medium-soft reed for oboe, valve oil for trumpet, and slide oil for trombone.

  • Percussion students you do not need to rent or buy a snare drum! Your percussion kit will have a small set of orchestra bells with mallets and a practice drum pad with sticks. Your child's school will already have full size drums.
