Garden To Table

This year the Year 5 team took on the challenge of setting up the Garden To Table programme at Milford School.

Our newly refurbished Pouaka Room has become a designated space for the cooking of delicious, nutritional meals made entirely by the children. As indicated by the name of the programme, the ingredients used in all recipes are sourced from the garden. Our garden beds are still under construction, however we hope that by the end of the year the vegetables needed for each session will be being harvested by the children from what they have sown and nurtured.

Garden to Table is a wonderful opportunity for the children to learn essential life long skills in both the kitchen and garden environment. The children have quickly begun to understand the time and effort required to set up and maintain a productive garden as they take responsibility for growing their own vegetables. The kitchen sessions also enable a considerable amount of learning. The children's knowledge of utensils, equipment, safety procedures and food has grown rapidly and will continue to do so as they experiment with new and exciting recipes each week.

We would like to thank the many local business who have supported us through the donations of garden tools, plants, compost, kitchen equipment and utensils. In addition a special thank you to Bunnings Warehouse and Men's Shed who have built our raised garden beds.

Volunteers

Please e-mail your child's class teacher if you are able to help in a kitchen or garden session. We require at least two adults in each and will do our best to to ensure you're with your child, however due to numbers this might not always be possible. We really appreciate your support!
