My journey to yonyou

As a release coach I get the question often how I ended up as the official business partner of Yonyou, a Chinese enterprise software company? I know Chinese enterprise software sounds strange for European IT decision makers, but are Chinese software applications really that rare?

If you look at your Chinese made phone with TikTok on it in your Chinese EV with its state of the art infotainment system, then you don’t need to list all the Chinese hardware around you to see that Chinese enterprise software is an obvious next wave of our new reality in IT.

But for a release coach it is not the real reason. The real reason hides in the answer to a simple question: 

What is release management?

Release management is risk management. Managing the risk of IT changes and Business Continuity.

What is a Chinese enterprise software program?

For me, as a release coach, a Chinese enterprise application is a proper answer to, a strong mitigation of certain risks in IT changes. An obvious response to certain IT resiliency challenges of corporations.

Having to read many BCP documents I can confirm that the best companies in the world manage IT resiliency strategies that include software vendor resiliency. But that vendor resiliency is often biassed. Diversified between software vendors from the same region of the world. (ex.: like planning to switch from SAP to Salesforce)

They are similar to an equity portfolio that believes to be diversified when holding IBM, Microsoft and Salesforce shares. 

But can you really regard an IT resiliency high when its software vendor resiliency relies on software vendors from the same power centers of the world?

If you are the board member of an international company then you easily understand that in certain parts of the world software vendor resiliency is part of everyday life, it is part of being a prudent company. 

And to keep that resiliency high all company boards need to reflect on the risks of not diversifying between software vendors according to the best BCP protocols.
