BOTNY 1010 Herbology for Midwives

COURSE PURPOSE & OVERVIEW:
This course is to guide aspiring midwives on the path of acquiring knowledge and experience in the herbal healing potential for people in the childbearing year. Incorporating texts rich with applicable knowledge, students will apply their studies to hands on experience in the field identifying & harvesting, making remedies and understanding applications for midwifery practice.
SPECIFIC LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. the role of herbs in midwifery care
2. dosage and proper and safe applications of herbal therapies
3. herbal properties and the body’s responses to herbs
5. methods of application
6. identifying herbs
7. basic structure of leaves, flowers, roots
8. Latin botanical name and family identification
9. taking herb walks to identify herbs
10. obtaining, harvesting and storing herbs
11. growing an herb garden
12. using herbs with caution
13. study of herbs for pregnancy and childbirth
14. the midwife’s herbal birth bag
15. making herbal preparations
16. research of 30 herbs
