This plant identification workshop will be based in Northwest Indiana with a focus on plants that occur within wetlands and wetland adjacent systems. We will visit various wetland and upland habitats, including bottomlands, emergent marsh, swamp forest, mesic prairie, planted prairie, and early successional systems.
Through this workshop, some of the topics you will learn include:
- the anatomy and terminology of difficult families such as grasses, asters, and sedges
- distinguishing between species and genera of wetland flora
- wetland indicators and their ecological significance
- how to use a dichotomous key in figuring out what genus/species you have
- ecological importance of wetlands and their associated uplands
