Effective Revision Habits & Strategies:
A Study Guide for Pupils & Parents
Why Revise?
Revision is very important, it helps you recall information and create links in your brain. The more you revise, the easier these links are to make (transferring information from your short term to your long term memory) and ultimately the easier it will be for you to recall information in an exam.
Revision will do a lot more for you than just help you remember what you did in class. It will:
Help improve your confidence
Get better prepared for future jobs/further education
Helps your creativity
Makes you more resilient

Spaced Practice
This is a strategy to help with remembering and revising concepts from a while ago. As well as strategies to help ensure knowledge learnt now will still be known by exam/test time.
Forgetting Curve - this shows how easily it is to forget something that has been taught, from leaving the classroom to many weeks later, but also how repetition can help combat this.
Retrieval Practice
This is a method of revision that involves trying to recall knowledge from memory and how to improve that. It also helps identify gaps in knowledge, so you know what you need to revise next. There are many methods from doing quiz's, making flashcards, brain dumps and mind-maps
Elaboration
Elaboration is a method to help improve grades and knowledge of concepts. It about challenging yourself to understand the concept more, but also to build connections between different ideas.
Interleaving
Interleaving is based around not studying one key area for too long. Have a break in between, revise another key area- then go back to it later. This will help strengthen understanding as well as make links.
Concrete Examples
This is where you find an example that helps you understand the area you are studying, this will help you understand different ideas.
Dual Coding
This combines words and visuals to help you learn information. You can then try and learn information and display it in different ways, ie make a cartoon strip, label a diagram.
