Exam Stress:
It is normal for young people to feel stressed out and anxious towards exam time but there is plenty things you can do to support at home.
Here are some websites which offer support to families during this period:
Tips for Studying:
Assessments can be stressful so encourage your child to take breaks. Hour long revision sessions with short regular breaks of 10 minutes can be effective.
They may prefer to complete each task and then build in a break rather than stick to definite time slots. It is the quality of studying which is important.
Ask your child how you can best support them with studying. They may find it useful for you to read through revision notes with them. Alternatively, asking them what they have learned in their revision may be helpful, or quizzing them using flashcards.
Look on Google Classroom - you may find teachers have posted revision activities or links to activities. For each class, all the course material will be on the Google Classroom.
Managing Time:
Young people can struggle to balance their time, and when they do start revising they struggle to know where to start.
Encourage students to start their revision early on. The earlier on they start, the easier it will be later.
Help them make a revision timetable (see example below)
Keeping Well:
Encourage your child to get plenty of sleep. This is particularly important the night before an assessment as it can help them perform better.
Encourage them to take some time after revising to wind down.
Reassure them – reinforce that you are and will be proud of them no matter what happens.
Remain positive and hopeful!
Encourage your child to eat well.
Help your child to avoid any unnecessary anxiety or panic by making sure they arrive on time for their assessment and have everything they need e.g. pens, pencils.
Encourage exercise
